Every time I encounter this, which if I'm running with my family members at all is all the time, I firstly rant in my head "can't believe you started this far forward and are running this slowly" and then immediately correct myself with "OK, I remember that last time I started at the back of the field it took well over 45s to cross the start line, so if you're going for a PB I can't fault your logic". In the main this impacts runners in the 20-24 minute range who won't start right on the front row alongside the sub 19 runners, but who nevertheless are still running a fair whack quicker than someone who is expecting to finish in 35 minutes or so. In reality, though the trip hazard bit is probably the worst impact, any impact on time for those 20-24 min runners is probably trivial providing they don't get too wound up by the experience.

(At some point in the future I'd guess that there will be a cheap and universal "chip time" style approach but that's a long way into the future I think with technology that is not yet available. And it may never arrive)

Tbh it needed to be done. Official cancellation messaging isn't the place for unleashing the internal comedian.

meh, people only need to know parkrun is cancelled. They don't need to know the exact reason why and with Somerdale its pretty obvious why we are cancelled anyway.

I do wish they would give a little more than "weather" though.

With EMS they introduced categories for cancellations to try to reduce incidences of people writing daft stuff that might be confusing to some parkrunners. Webfms was by default freetext. With EMS you can still do freetext but you have to click "other" first, and then type in your funny joke.

He didn't - which, TBH, came as no surprise to me. I didn't recognise him, and don't think I've seen him there since, so assume he was a one-and-done tourist.

Oh, and that you are OK of course.

It was an unpleasant experience, but I was fine. It could have been far worse, though - it was a few months after I'd had knee surgery (hence my being so far back), but fortunately it was my less-bad* knee that hit the deck, and I happened to be far enough over that it hit grass rather than tarmac.
That was back in the days when (knee surgery aside) I was quick enough to avoid being lapped on our 2 lap course, even by our local regular sub-15 guy.

I've found that most folks are pretty reasonably, both when lapping and being lapped. I (obviously) have considerably more experience of being the latter - but a "passing on your left/right" from behind can be helpful (especially if it's in plenty of time to move over before the pass).

I suppose the answer is to stick to the single lap wonders of my locals at Black Park and Upton

Coincidentally, we were thinking of a trip over to Upton Court this weekend (to bag a 'U'), but unfortunately we'd have to cancel that for this weekend, so it'll probably have to wait until next year.

*"less-bad" is a far more accurate description than "good".
