Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Edinburgh now has a very long funnel. This came about a few years ago when over 800 were turning up and the funnel was backing up beyond the finish line which brought other issues. I was timer once and had no idea how to do timing as people were waiting a long time from stopping running to getting to the finish line. Some were running to teh finish and others would then double back to join the Q

Edinburgh tried multiple funnels and an S shaped thing but neither solved the issue an it ended up being a long funnel was the answer. Thing is its only needed when you get to 700+ numbers which isnt often, but you need to be prepared.

That's exactly it - long funnels stop the line waiting for tokens from backing up over the finish. I have seen on an unexpectedly busy day at one local parkrun the funnel lengthened around us during peak arrival time. Equally if it is very busy again faster runners often core team members step in as extra funnel managers. I am funnel manager on Saturday and all it takes is one funnel ducker or a someone oblivious on their headphones still running cos their garmin doesnt say 5k yet (trees!) past a crowd who finished in front of them and results go pear shaped.

Exactly. Once you get to a situation where, at peak finishing times, the rate of people crossing the finish line might be higher than the maximum rate at which tokens can be handed out, you need an appropriately long funnel to smooth the flow.

If you need eight funnel managers it might be a justification to use money from the donation pot for barbed wire...

Pre-Covid, when we would attract 500+, if the crowd looked bigger than usual I sometimes had a funnel extension ready in case we ended up with so many waiting to get a token that they backed up over the finish line (that happened on a previous occasion). Only really needed it for the really busy period in the middle of the run, so when I did use it I had the normal finish at first, extended finish for the busy period. and then shortened it again afterwards.

After a recommendation for tomorrow. Staying at East Midlands Airport and there's several parkruns in the area. Any that anyone would particularly recommend?

Not sure which ones you are looking at, but I'll be at Beeston - (in firework leggings and apricot top) - course is a lap around the canal/river with an out and back along the canal to finish (flat) and Long Eaton is cancelled

I enjoyed Dishley/Loughborough when I did it. Will probably be muddy though if that's an issue for you.
