It's not plight. I do feel (& think!) that organisations should be doing their best to treat everyone equally.

I've looked up the partner offer, it was a discount on a 10k. But, you had to have done 40+ parkruns in the year prior.
With a few event cancellations, & a few Saturdays when an individual can't make it, you don't have to have volunteered much to be under that 40.

Yet parkrun have the data on runs & volunteering, so it could have been a combined figure.
(The offer was more than once)

I'm sure you're right that in some aspects, the "count" of volunteering vs running sometimes causes a lack of access for volunteers.

But isn't the whole point of volunteering that it is voluntary. No value is (should be) sought by the volunteers in return for their commitment.

50 t-shirts are recognising something specific - that you have run 50 parkruns. Not that you've attended them, that you've gone from the start to the finish 50 times. Blending in volunteer counts into that total would be illogical, and starts turning volunteering into something people do to earn something tangible in return.

The V25 t-shirts are a voluntary "thank you" by parkrun - and no-one should volunteer simply because they know a thank you is coming later down the line. The run t-shirts are a voluntary "well done" from parkrun. Arguably no-one should run just to earn a t-shirt, but it's a motivation, a lure, to keep you running.

The value of volunteering to me is ensuring we have an event to turn up to. I appreciate those that put the event on when it suits me to take part and do when it doesn’t suit me I pitch up to ensure others can.

I'm not quite sure of the logical consistency there in saying that the 50 shirts are a motivation or lure for the runners but V25 are not the same for the volunteers.

I haven't said that anything should be sought by volunteers.
It's also not about any one individuals motivation, as there will be a multitude of different ones.
It's about the organisation.

Is everyone at parkrun a parkrunner? Yes/No
If No, why not?
If Yes: Should the organisation do it's best to treat all parkrunners equally? Yes/No
If No, why not?

I think everyone is treated equally. Everyone has the opportunity to run and earn their 50 T-Shirts. Everyone has the opportunity to volunteer and earn their 25.

If an event is cancelled, then everyone has the opportunity to go to another event... if someone who was volunteering doesn't want to and offers to stay to let people know it's off, then thank you very much... if no one does that, then people will know when they arrive and see no one there.

If there is an event on at a local parkrun, it's usually advertised in advance, so if someone is especially interested in that then they can volunteer another week and run that week.

If you're keen to do both run and volunteer, then there are roles that allow this.

@jda - my logic isn't entirely logical. It was more trying to express why I thought HQ gave out t-shirts.

They don't give the run t-shirts out out of gratitude (i.e. "Thank you for running") so much as set them as an achievable "earn" for each runner - something to work towards.

The volunteer t-shirts in part did come along because (some) volunteers griped that they didn't get visible recognition for their "achievements" of volunteering a lot. But I got the impression HQ acquiesced in making them available more as a way of thanking the cohorts of volunteers, rather than intending the V25 club should be something people work towards.

It's just an emphasis thing. Or maybe it's just my impression; I would set myself the challenge of earning a running t-shirt, I wouldn't ever set myself the challenge of volunteering 25 times.

Dont get me started on 'rewards' for junior parkrunners. The wrist bands are a bit poor and the certificate (which the parent has to print themselves) is pathetic.

Compared to that, 5k parkrunners get a fantastic range of rewards.
