"Apparently we only used phones for scanning today but I'm still a bit nervous about only phones for timing" Junsd timers are quite cheap if HQ aren't supplying them any more - SuperSporty or Ebay. |

Thanks. Perhaps that's the way to go.

I'm slowly moving Cleethorpes over towards app. The same day I suggest this, one of my RD team announces he's stepping down from RD-ing. I don't know whether the two things are linked. |

Or whether, like me, he's just tired of losing weekends after nearly 5 years with nothing to actually show for it. This guy has probably RDed more than any other member of my team.

A break is good. Bring in fresh blood and get a different perspective on the team. Why not go out to all the regular volunteers and see if anyone fancies having a go at RDing?

To be fair, we've had quite a recent new RD influx. I have a feeling that the new perspective might be a bit of an issue for the old hands. The event has changed not inconsiderably from 70 people round a lake and through a bog, and my "have a go at this and see if it works" method of solving problems isn't to everyone's taste. He'll still volunteer, just not RD. Which is good news. |

He's been with me since the start. When we started out it was 70 runners, shout "go" and then click them in, scan them and send them home. It wasn't 300 runners, pacer weeks, defibrillator tests, several tail walkers with the tail taking over an hour, monthly kit refreshes, volunteers bringing their own equipment, formal pre-event course checks, and a weekly change of funnel configuration. |

(Nothing to show for it But, the Joy, the mountains of Joy!) I was interested to read this, which, contrary to any other recent (or indeed, not so recent) official communication, does seem to suggest that parkrunners should consider volunteering once every x and that core team/ regular volunteers might like a break sometimes. blog.parkrun.com |

Not sure it suggests they should consider volunteering like that, just throws out there the self evident fact that if they did volunteer on that basis there'd be few slots to fill!

Which sort of begs the question - what sort of ratio would be implied if one tried to model some simple assumptions about running / volunteering. I'm sure the maths is relatively easy, but I can't quite get my head around it. Something like this:- - Assume everyone parkrunning visits a parkrun on average 5 times per year - Assume 15% of parkrunners aren't eligible to undertake a role (e.g. too young) - Assume an average participant volume of 250 per parkrun - Assume average volunteer requirement is 15 individuals If all volunteering was evenly spread, how what proportion of the 5 visits per year would need to be volunteer visits vs running visits. |
