Volunteered at a different parkrun this Saturday (10K on the Sunday, so no parkrun run on Sat for me). Confidently said, yes I know this course and yes, I've marshalled before. Then when I got there, remembered that it's a 2 lapper and one of those laps detours to go round the duck pond and one doesn't... But which one?! Had to ask a runner (before the race, not first place as he cruised along in the run!) Was also aided by a very knowledgeable 11 year old who turned up with her Mum who also knew - 2nd lap only!
The perils and potential pitfalls of volunteering (or of volunteering hubris, in this case, as I should just have asked RD before I set off!) G

Fun and games this week at Curly Wurly. I arrived on Saturday super early as RD because I knew that the ever nearing groundworks were likely to have reached our course. The worst had happened and there was a metre deep trench cutting a wide swathe across part of our course meaning our out and back section couldn't be used.
I quickly trotted a lap of the course without this section and doubled it for our two laps before going "Oh F***, where am I going to find 700m from?" working back from our normal finish (both clockwise and anticlockwise) would mean starting at the narrowest twistiest parts of our course.
Fortunately the cyclocross guys have created lots of cut throughs and sections for kids races and to avoid some of their obstacles. Using some of these I managed to find the extra distance and as a bonus our start and finish on this adjusted course are now adjacent to each other which I prefer. Does require a confident marshal and some running about as core team to adjust parts of the course but the new course has received universal acclaim from the runners and we are now considering making it a permanent change.
I have a feeling this course is slightly shorter than our original which was (deliberately) a little long anyway due to the proportion of PBs that we saw on Saturday. strava stalking show the average GPS measurement is still just over 5km which given our twisty nature means its still probably a bit long.
Now I just have to get the rest of the team up to speed with this

"Ellon parkrun have been asking for donations of old smartphones over the past few weeks, they've got a few now ready to use."
We made this point at our event - if HQ is pushing use of the app rather than the old scanners, then we really need our own devices, rather than hoping the person who requested to scan or time has downloaded the app themselves.

To revisit the timeout thing, I can't turn mine off because of work security. It makes it hard not to double tap when you are timing.
I'm a fan of the app generally, though.

Re the volunteer app, playing about with lovely new phone but scanner just crashes the app. Somes references to newish android phones not working on google play. Anyone heard of similar issues. Works a treat on the 5 year old defunct phone it's replacing.

We had a very annoying experience of someone (independently) deciding to use the app for scanning, instead of the barcode: the file it sends to the PC seems to need a lot more fiddling with than the scanner files if there are errors.

Really, Sally? We must have been lucky so far as the app info has been very straightforward. (That is a *huge* temptation to fate - I'm RD this week, most of the core team are away at a very nearby inaugural 'to assist if needed' and I'll doubtless be scratching my head over the laptop in the cafe!)
