I am thinking more of minor selections. You would hope that national level is a bit different, but I can think of various selectors who might use parkrun as a form indicator, and something similar applies to youngsters aiming for the mini marathon selection (whereby they use parkrun as the selection events).

If you've got lots of athletes to chose from it can come down to fine margins and a bit of guesswork sometimes about who is on an upward curve and who is not. You can see how recent times *could* come into play.

Edinburgh does that, Edison. I thought their iteration of funnel management was a bit excessive.

Needs to be far enough through the finish. I have seen people queued up without crossing the line.

Also remember being then funneled to scanning which failed badly as I never carry my barcode when I run.

I keep my barcode in my jacket which I'll leave somewhere, so funnel to scanning just does not work

At Braunstone Park (Leicester) we have a 15m (guess) funnel which is airport tape style and about a metre wide. We also aim to have 6 funnel managers keeping people moving and in order. Tokens are handed out at the end of the funnel. Four scanners are then arranged in a semi circle probably 7 or 8 metres from the end of the funnel. It works well but at times seems a bit ott.

Edison isn't it up to you how wide your finish funnel is? Ours could be twenty feet wide if we wanted but we deliberately keep it narrow to stop queue jumping. We have around 500 runners so a narrow but long enough funnel works well for us.

Braunstone sounds like York Knavesmire, but when there's 500+ attendees it's not over the top.

In the "bulge" period around 22-28 minutes the funnel managers are really earning their volunteer points!

Huddersfield has a 180 degree turn in the funnel (i.e. two right turns). It's taped to about a metre wide so funnel ducking isn't a big problem - but backing up towards the finish line certainly is...

The token givers are told to walk backwards to extend the funnel even more if the queue backs up to the funnel. The only time we've had a problem recently was when we had over 700 runners but even then it was pretty minimal.

The finish funnel at North Beach Durban (one of, if not the, biggest parkrun) is like an airport queuing system, zig-zagging back and forth multiple times. While at quiet Ruchill you just veer off the course and the token volunteer finds you. Whatever works!
