@NZD Good luck for Sunday @GimmeMedals well done with the 7.3 miles. Isn’t the far north wonderful? @OO61 I hope the stretching is leading to recovery @Welshpoppy I hope the Achilles is continuing to ease @Torque Steer it sounds like you had a miserable time. But it is good to hear that you are running again @Solo pleasing the hear about your super run a few days ago @alehouse it is good to hear about the steady progress. I am currently enjoying the wonderful sunshine on the fells. I am also pleased with progress with weightlifting. I have already achieved the bench-press goal I had set for age 80 (5x50Kg) and will revise my target upwards slightly – though in one’s late70’s improving life-time bests is not easy. |

That's rubbish, @Torque Steer ! Great birthday present and I bet you missed the Hash, also! Just ticking over this week but legs feel very tired: three days of work during which I walked over 9000 steps each day around school, plus the stress that Ofsted brings, plus quite a bit of gardening, not that you can tell. On Saturday I am supposed to be parkrunning with my neighbour: he turned a sprightly 80 today. I dare say he will be some way ahead of me on Saturday if his recent 26:xx is anything to go by...and it is not the quickest of courses. Wordle in three/four/three the last few days. |

TS it's a start. Welcome back! Alehouse you need to find some less nippy friends 🤭 Enjoy parkrun.... Canute go easy with those weights 💪 I had an easy long run in the sun and decent pool swim. |

Many thanks everyone for the good wishes. Will need all of them, plus a few planetary alignment favours! Decided to spend the two nights beforehand in a holiday unit near the race start/finish area as the race starts at 7am on Sunday morning. Getting down here before 6am from our place and finding parking would be a challenge. So having a bit of relaxation away from home for the first time in about a year! Pretty wet and windy at the moment. But rain at least forecast to clear up by tomorrow. Not feeling confident, especially as prep somewhat deficient. Then again, think I probably felt this way about all races I have done. Time will tell! @Torque Steer sounds like you have had a horror fortnight 😕. Hope you manage to shake the residual effects quickly. Hope you and your now M80 buddy have a good parkrun @alehouse. I suspect you will surprise yourself! Good progress with the weights @Canute. Not something I have ever attempted - more an outdoor person but probably should be doing more strength work. Impressive long run and swim @OO61. Looking good for your 10k @GimmeMedals. That's a decent improvement in distance. Hope Achilles better again today @Welshpoppy. @wick, all the best for your 10 mile race on Sunday. |

Beating Achilles into submission is one approach @Welshpoppy ! I don’t use straps (yet) because up to now my grip strength has improved with deadlift increase. At some point I expected to use straps so that grip wasn’t limiting factor. But now I have this unilateral grip loss issue I’m reconsidering lots of things. Currently progressing through a series of diagnostic tests in Spanish public health system - that I am impressed with so far. X-ray, bloods and urine, EMG maybe MRI. I think they want to trial some new kit! |

Thanks for good wishes all! the moral to this post is - don't lose track of what's happening on here :-)!! @NZD all the best for your HM - hope the weather is kind. Sounds like perfect preparation - luxury of two days stay beforehand. Your taper sounded fine and the race will hopefully throw up no unexpected hills! @Solo two 10K's on successive days - that's mmmm plausible ![]() @Pussy it becomes a tightrope as one gets older between training and resting - the temptation is to do more of the former and less of the latter particularly as muscle mass deteriorates rather more quickly as one ages, and increasingly so after >70-75 years, and "normal" training doesn't really build it back. @alehouse that's a full on period and the OFSTED inspection doesn't do anyone any favours. I am sure you would like to aim some comments at the inspectors based upon numerous years at the chalkface! Good luck with the parkrun - you may surprise yourself... @Welshpoppy nasty achilles - it does seem to be on the increase again in flaring up but you ar still managing to get out there. @OO61 are you doing stretching or strengthening exercises - or both? My strengthening ones have certainly helped my knee considerably - as has been ably demonstrated by having a fortnight off them!! Sounded like an awful day yesterday ![]() @Canute excellent progress on your weight target and continued delight at runnin gin this superb weather. How is your knee holding up? @EarlyRiser looked like an "interesting" 10K route ![]() @GimmeMedals Jeffing can be a very good way to get back to fitness - I used it myself when coming back from my thyroid collapse and had to build up very slowly. Your trip sounds great - I have wanted to do that for some time now taking time to appreciate the whole environment. |

Now bear with me - a convoluted tale for this morning's excursion. It was our wedding anniversary yesterday and , not having done anything about it, present wise, I suggested a meal out at a very nice restaurant which was accepted. Drove there and parked on the street outside. Lovely meal, enlivened by some vino, got a taxi home realising I needed to be back before 0800 the next morning before the parking wardens started their rounds, and as I was parked almost opposite their office, I would be a prime target!! Set alarm, forgot to switch it on, woke rather later than usual - get a move on. 2 miles done, came to path where I run my 1/4 mile intervals, and my car visible in the distance, so I did what any sensible runner would do after two weeks off with a debilitating infection, and thought "I wonder what time I can run an interval?" Answer was, not very fast ![]() Anyway I beat the gathering yellow vested lesser spotted wardens by a good two minutes to my car ![]() |
