Very droll Bobzo.
Yikes. Silk Road 'five Stans' tours seem quite the trendy thing. Apart from a coy 'slightly less stable than its neighbours' comment on some tour website I had no idea about Tajikistan being so, erm, 'dodge'.

I’m currently reading Solo by Jenny Tough. She’s done (and won) the Silk Road race as well as run in the mountains over there - solo. It definitely sounds like it has some dodgy moments, and she was perhaps safer in the mountains.
It’s a very easy read for someone like me who would be very out of place in the Fetch book club.

I went to Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on an organised cycling trip in, I think, 2008. Had a good time, no obvious corruption then, but I guess being on a group tour you're a bit shielded.
It borders Afghanistan, and it was said a lot of drugs come up from there. It seemed a very economically poor country.

That’s the kind of picture that gave me the idea. Fabulous.

Grep, my ex bf went and did the Silk Road Bikepacking race a few years ago and he had a few hair-raising moments including guns and men in balaclavas/headscarves... It put me right off. The scenery however is spectacular! But equally good on the MTB trip I did in stead: Atlas Mountains, Jebel Sahro, into the Sahara. Morocco. Much safer and ticked all boxes including no phone reception or electricity for days!
