I had to have words with a young GP a few years ago with regard to his assumption that I hadn't really stopped smoking. We get on much better now (which is just as well, as he's now been my next door neighbour for the past 3 years).

Thanks Bja, so very helpful!
I shall take some advice as to what to do with my two rather small private pension pots.
I thought, until mum died, I would use them to pay off the mortgage. But that has now been paid off.

Jelly - you should get NI pension credits for full tax years from any child benefit claim - up to age 12, I think. You can check on gov.uk, and always better to investigate & claim if the years aren't credited. Or if no child benefit because of tax rates, better to claim now rather than wait 10/15/20 years ...

I stopped claiming child benefit in 2017, due to tax rates, but did claim from 2004, although that’s really useful to know I’ll take a look!

Looking back, we should have contributed the permitted amount to a personal pension for eL Bee! all the years when he was a SAHP, but we'd have struggled to afford it without sacrificing the things that made our lives worth living back then. If I'd decided to work a bit more so that we could save more, the extra income would just have gone into the same "domestic expenses" black hole as most of the rest.

I’m not going to regret being at home like I am, I love it, I just worry about what I’m going to do when it is time to get a job! Youngest will be going to high school next year!

We found that the children being in high school didn't make having a parent at home any less useful, and it meant I wasn't having to worry about dealing with family emergencies at work. Which isn't to say that there weren't times when I resented being the person whose time wasn't their own while the children were at school.

And I'm getting sodding retirement planning adverts everywhere I go on the internet now.
