Did they go this way, that way, forward, backward, over the Irish Sea, by any chance?

The day I went to sea, GregP. I don't remember it as a tennis ball song. We went over, under, over, round and something else - bounce? Then clapped. And had to clap one more each time until we couldn't catch the ball.

We went this way, that way, forward and backwards, over the Irish sea, a bottle of rum to fill my tum ... but as a clapping game with two or more people.

Pleased to report my 10-y-o is well versed in 'Across the Irish Sea' and we often sing it together on her way to school. She even has her own variations:
"When I was three I saw a Bee And then I went to sea I jumped aboard..." etc

My mother said, I never should, play with the gipsies in the wood, if I did, she would say, you naughty little girl to disobey, your hair won't curl, your shoes won't shine, you dirty little girl you're no child of mine
Amazing how unacceptable those skipping rhymes actually were
