Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Rallyo and Staggio are a bit like BB. Basically tick/catch with added fighting! :-)

Kerbie was a favourite around our street. Then the frisbee arrived and took over for a time.

The worst DOMS I ever had (with the possible exception of my first marathon and first Comrades) was after a street Olympics. Long jump onto hard tarmac anyone?!

We left skipping etc to the girls. Boys formed a line with arms round shoulders and walked around chanting 'who wants a game of Japs and Commandos, no girls!'. If you wanted in you joined one end of the line. I remember this better than the war games themselves.

I discovered the other week that there are still Blue Peter Badges. I was doing school dental inspections and one of the 12 year olds was wearing one. My (nearly 50 year old) nurse and I were both impressed, neither of us knew anyone who got one as kids.

British Bulldog. Which is, kinda, a spectator sport in India. I started a Fetch kabaddi thread once. It wasn’t a success.

I’ve loved reading back on the last 30-odd posts. The only time I thought ‘what?!’ was Sharkle’s head-patting one.

V'rap? And anyone else in bike touring for that matter? Can you do me a favour and have a look on Smell, sort of bottom of page 16749?

I was trying to find one of the old bike threads to revive but gave up because it's basically just the Smell crowd and you anyway :)

It seemed that that there were clear separations in respect of games for girls and games for boys although things like "mob" and "sardines" included both. There wasn't any nastiness or exclusion for either gender--it just seemed to happen and was accepted. No games were "better" but merely different and I don't recall any boy or girl wanting to fit into a different group. Rightly or wrongly.

It was interesting at some stage when groups of us played "doctors and nurses" and the boys were tended by nurses in quite a risqué manner on occasion--I can't recall anyone ever being a "doctor" but the boys were generally the patients!

Mrs macca was dragged up in Wythenshaw, Sharkie (but then went dead posh and moved to Sale); I’m a Bury boy but like most urban folk around here I guess, we spent hours playing around half-demolished slum clearance sites.

Tee hee re Sale, Macca. My Dad was from Wythenshaw, Mum from Middleton. I was brung up between Gorton and Hyde - or between Shameless and Life on Mars as I sometimes put it.

Slum clearances were good play sites. Quite a few abandoned or run down factories and mills too. A few broken windows were an open invitation to add a few more.

Not that I ever did. Obviously.

We had fields too on the A57.

I could never do handstands, though several little girls could and did (dress tucked into knickers, as Sharkie said). Handstands were called tiss-ups.
