I couldn't do handstands either Columba, or 'the crab'. Perhaps that's why I preferred football and cricket with the boys! Although I only played in our street or on the estate - once at junior level it was boys only football in the playground. I do hope it's different now!

I have to share this with you all. I blogged it a year or two ago because I think it's funny - such a long preamble to what is basically a game of tick/catch.

The game is called 'Come downstairs without laughing'

One girl* is 'on', she is Mam, I guess, the others all stand in a line. If there is some sort of ramp or stone steps or whatever, all the better. At St. Anne's County Primary we used to hang off the railings on the ramp up to the girls outside toilets.

Mam: (having selected her victim) 'Sharkie Summers - come downstairs without laughing!'
Sharkie does so and stands in front of Mam who tries to make her laugh. If she succeeds Sharkie Summers takes the place of Mam - but if not the ensuing dialogue must be strictly followed.

'Sharkie Summers - go to the shops and get these things.'

Mam invents a short list of groceries.

Sharkie then wanders off and pretends to go shopping. In about - hmm - one minute, she walks back to Mam and stands in front of her. She makes some show of handing over the shopping.

'Where's the change?'
'Down the grid.'
'How do you expect me to get it?'
'Table and chair.'
'What if I break me neck?'
'I don't care.'
'Where's your father?'

'Cracking nuts.'
'Who for?'
'None for you greedy guts!'

And Sharkie Summers runs off with Mam in hot pursuit.

* usually girls as we've discussed

I'm the proud owner of a Blue Peter Badge :)

Can't remember the exact details as it was a very long time ago! But I seem to recall that I had sent in a mosaic type picture made from coloured eggshells.

My primary school had separate playgrounds for boys and girls, so the games were obviously played along gender lines.

I used to be able to do handstands and the crab.
None of the rhymes you have mentioned were ever done by us but sadly I can't remember what was.

I could do handstands and headstands but never the crab.

Yoga tries to get us to do these but I never will now. ;-)

Don't be so sure alpenrose.

I couldn't do the splits as a kid - by my 50s I could!

(Still can't do handstands - more to the point I'm too scared to try. Can just about do the crab...)

Handstands - use a wall and/or a friend ... your choice whether to use the 1960s/70s dress technique or just wear shorts.
Crab - can still do. (for a few seconds)

But as boys - it was typically football - mostly with a tennis ball, or if indoors, cricket - with a folded up cap for a ball.

I learned to do handstands when I was 35 ! At the same time as I learned to juggle!
