Hi struthious,

When I was your age, I'm 72 now, I had a tempo measured session to ascertain my max hr. I had to do 4 x 1470 metres on grass, and in between, they took a blood sample from my ear lobe. This meant a very short recovery between efforts. My maximum hr was 157 and lactate 9.55. I ran 6.7 miles on road yesterday wearing my hr strap and my readings were average 134 and max 150.

I well remember, eL Bee! In my head, it is always the "JHuff calc" :-).

Iirc, it was because he had been quite stridently dogmatic - then admitted he had never actually done an all out MHR test :-p.

Interesting, hillstrider. Longer repeats on a surface with some give in it would perhaps be a safer way for the more senior athlete to go about it.

Welcome struthious!

Can you find somewhere studying aging runners and get the testing done properly? We are quite popular study subjects as comparisons to those with some sort of illness.

There is an element of logic in Jhuff's method in that you are unlikely to have hit your actual max and while close adding a few more BPMs is likely to be closer to the true max. However only the lab test will tell for sure. As was said, the issue with JhUff was when it came to light he didnt actually know his max which contradicted what he had been suggesting (as far as I can recall - but I am over 50 so who knows if thats accurate !)

Struthius, do you feel you need an absolutely accurate MHR measure?

Columba, Dvorak, Flatlander, Flier, Fifty Seven and a Half, el Bee, Hillstrider, and all, as I woke this morning I felt sure psychiatric advice would be recommended :)

Thanks all for invaluable input and links. I'll follow this up and report back on my next PB!

With the mentions of things past on the HR thread, I had a bit of a look down the time tunnel at it. Gosh, it did get a bit ... confrontational at times :-).

I also found the page with the quote which is still today the thread header. fetcheveryone.com/forum__3882__1096__heart_rate

And this image which might amuse el Bee!, but at the same time is not recommended for those of a sensitive disposition fetcheveryone.com/forum__3882__1108__heart_rate
