Good to see you here MadWelshWoman...you're about seventy miles west of me here in Cardiff! Not a good idea to struggle and run with serious Achilles pain. Best "trick" is to rest until it's gone. I'm sure you have loads of advice from Darth Runners anyway! Try a sports physio...don't make things worse!!

Canute
With regard to Zatopek's grimacing, it is interesting to note that grunting while playing a stoke in tennis increases to force applied via the raquet by about 4%. However, I think there are more effective ways to teach your Central Governor to allow you to run more powerfully. I have posted a discussion of this on my Wordpress blog. canute1.wordpress.com

If it's proper Achilles tendinitis or tendinopathy rather than just dull aches, then the best "trick" is eccentric heel drops, together with promotion of blood flow to the tendon, coupled with rest.

Interesting stuff, Canute. I experienced something related, but still a bit different on Sunday. I should probably wrestle it into a blog, but basically, it was what I'll call the training/racing paradox, which is that in a race I produced a performance which I did not (indeed, could not) get anywhere near in training.

Where my case is unrelated is that I didn't get runners high, into the zone, or a second wind (though I did produce a decent finish.) It was also a PW, but a much better PW than my astonishingly inadequate training would have indicated. A good bit of which was due I reckon to having done sixty of so events of the distance or more (ten miles) before: ref Canute's article, maybe I have an enlarged lump of gray matter which deals with race management ;-). (And which only<b/> works in a race situation.)
