Slightly similar experience here WtnMel, except that the blizzard arrived just as I was getting changed into running kit. So much for that plan.

Which U3A group did you go to Mel, or was it the 'general' meeting? I've thought about getting involved with them but really I don't have the time at present.

Same here, Daisy; even though I have friends who are closely involved.

I keep considering U3A here but can't find any activities that I fancy at an appropriate time. They also want you to do 3 activities if possible.

I thought about U3A but the activities here were too sedentary focusesd. That wa a few years ago so might check it out again. Ideally, I'd create a circle of old ( and I mean old chronologically) runners, outdoor types so that there is rough equality in ability. As it is I do volunteer work anyway... As for running partners my wife is a fair runner ( ultra, over 100 miles in 24 hours on a few occasions) but far to capable for me in respect of us being a running duo!
Been running in snow this morning for the first time in many years.

LD - it was a general U3A meeting .. "The Story of Cheltenham Told through its Festivals". I've not decided yet which group(s) to get involved with or how much time I'll have to spare. But have put my name down for boules (starts in March) and offered my services to the computer group (background in IT support before I retired). However, I've decided whatever I do needs to be something I don't already know about - to take me out of my comfort zone.

I had another look at the U3A stuff on offer round here and like Steve, find them all a bit too sedentary for me at present. My sister goes to a very good Wine Appreciation group where she lives but I see that our local group is 'monthly by arrangement' which doesn't sound terribly active.
It's a bit like the WI. I just don't feel old enough to join them either

Ours has a walking group; but on investigation it appears to favour a short slow saunter followed by an extended pub visit. Nothing wrong with that, but I do actually like walking.

Yes ours calls it 'Ambling' which is not really what I'd be after. It's like when I first stopped working and thought I'd volunteer to lead 'health walks' for the local council. I should have guessed when the co-ordinator 'I think you'll be a bit too fit for them' - when I went for a trial walk with the group I found it really hard to walk so slowly and all we did was a very short and flat stroll. They're a really good idea if you have absolutely no base fitness, and want to ward off loneliness as they were a very friendly bunch, but it wasn't how I wanted to spend my morning.

I've never followed through suggestions that I should take my colleagues out for walks during the working day for exactly that reason. It would just turn my stress-relieving walks into an extra source of frustration.
