MWW, I tore the menisci in my right knee at the end of June last year, and have gradually been recovering. I've kept up a good level of fitness, by attending spin classes twice a week, and working out in the gym.
You are certainly correct that it takes longer to recover. At my age of 72, it takes longer than for most.

Garfield, I have always stretched before and after running, dynamic before and static after. I contribute almost 35 years of virtually injury free running, until last year, to this.

I ran 8.1 miles in the forest this morning. It is drying out, leaving hard, uneven mud, which for me is worse than when it's wet and squelchy. I had the wind behind me on the outward leg, but the return was very tough. Felt like I was dragging a very heavy tyre behind me. Good for strength and endurance though!

Is this club for those that have acquired the age of 50, or do you need to be 51?

Are you asking for a friend or wondering whether we've got a Pedants' Corner on the thread, Dio? ;) (Traditionally, 50 is considered plenty old enough.)

50 y.o. are definitely allowed. We even grant probationary status for pre-50s who want to see what we're like :-p.

There is plenty of talk going on :-).

Thank you. I will be fully qualified in a little less than a month when I begin my 52nd year vaguely on the planet.

MWW - sorry to hear you got injured at the Snowdonia marathon. Did wonder why we hadn't seen you on the RW Mature Runners thread lately but then people do tend to drift in and out from time to time. Anyway, glad to hear you've not given up just yet! Must say you're very lucky to be able to run on the beach and have a post-run dip in the sea (says he from landlocked Gloucestershire).

HS - I think my last cold showers (other than perhaps being overheated after a sauna) were probably when I was at school.

Going back to the swimming discussion, the only time I was able to go regularly was when I was out of work. I used to go to the early morning (7am) sessions three times a week because apart from the exercise, it meant I didn't drift into a lethargic, 'nothing to get up for' mentality. When I was swimming regularly, I worked my way up over a few months from 5-10 breathless lengths to 55-60. BTW, although I will happily swim up and down the pool into the deep end, I'm too much of a scaredy-cat to consider open-water swimming and being out of my depth for a long period of time.

Left foot news (which I know you're all waiting for with bated breath ;) ) .. the swelling and soreness have gone away .. I'll give it a couple more days then go out for a tentative jog-ette and hopefully, all will be well again.

WtnMel, I used to swim in the sea when I was a youngster and on holiday in the summer with my parents on the Isle of wight. I did swim in an open air pool with my children when we lived in Aylesbury, but all my my swimming since has been in indoor heated pools.
