hi, after a few sea swims last year im looking to get more into open water swimming this year.

So as a newbie just saying Hi, when does the water warm up and what are the do's and donts, what kit items are essential or more worth renting if I swim in a lake

Thanks in advance

Round here it warms up around August, if you're lucky :-)

For me, a wetsuit is essential, but others are far hardier. Tow float for definite anyway, most of them have a useful pocket/compartment for valuables which is handy beyond the safety aspects.

Sushi.
It’s amazing the difference a tow float makes to a kayak or SUP. Swimmers can be virtually invisible without one, even if their hat is a bright colour.

Suit rentals round here have stopped with Covid, though you can rent online. You can get a cheap wetsuit from Wiggle or Decathlon.

And swim at a proper organised venue. At least at first.

Today I swam in the Loch for the first time in ages. 10* which felt amazing. I preferred it to the sea which is my usual choice because it’s closer.
