I've been worrying about non-wetsuit swims so I've been practicing in the pool and it hasn't been utterly horrible but I has been ugly.

so, down to the lake today to try a non-wetsuit swim. i learnt two things:
1 - swimming in water that is 27 degrees (yes, count them!!) is lovely
2 - 200m without a wetsuit was more than enough to tell me that i'll never get around 1.9K without a wetsuit

the forecast for next week is getting cooler, with a chance of rain on sunday, so i've got my fingers crossed.

How's the weather looking Gordon? It's cooled right down in London (thank God!) and we've had loads of rain :-)

Out of curiosity what is it about the non-wetsuit swim that's the problem? I know I need to work a bit harder to keep my legs up and I'm significantly slower without a wetsuit but I think I could do 1.9k if the time-limit was generous. The main problem I had to start with was more psychological as I felt a lot less secure in just a swimsuit. I have overcome this but it has taken 2 years of practice.

My next challenge is proper sea swimming (I'm bloody rubbish with waves) and I'm off on Saturday for my first real practice!

I'm not doing very well with my sea swimming :-(. Slow breaststroke is not a problem but front crawl is making me giddy even in quite calm seas. I think leaving my earplugs at home hasn't helped.

I have dense, sinky legs so I need to work hard at staying flat in the water without the buoyancy of a wetsuit. I'm not actually that much slower without it since it restricts my shoulder movement and feels a bit sticky and icky. I am getting better with practice and help from an excellent coach. I can recommend the excellent coaching thing.

There’s usually a swell here, LD, but my dizziness waits till I try to get out :-)
Re. jetskiers, speedboats etc. There are summer only white buoy rows about 300 or more metres out, but the mindless idiots (even more worrying) take no notice. The lifeguards on main beach are onto them, but only between 9am - 5pm. The harbour master occasionally goes round but they see him, & my local beach, under Portland harbour master, is out of sight, not within harbour wall. Annoyingly, they are allowed inside buoys, speed limit 6knots. As if. What can you do? If it’s windy we can’t take a float. A swimmer who went out on her son’s jet ski said you really can’t see swimmers easily. Most of the boats in Newtons Cove, diving, fishing, crab/lobster potting or whatever are very careful but the few are terrifying. Doesn’t stop me loving the swimming, only one close encounter, a show off who I knew had seen me, but eventually someone’s luck will run out as otherwise it’s such a popular very safe swimming area.

That long rant should have been a blog, sorry, no idea how to move it.

Where are you swimming Nemo - if ever in Weymouth let me know :-)

I hope wetsuits are permitted for your race luck Gordon - it is much slower for me without a wetsuit but with generous cutoff time & plenty of safety craft it would probably be fine.

I'm the same as RichHL. I have to work at staying flat and it's a big part of my training when I'm in the pool. In the sea it's much better, the salinity of the water gives that bit more buoyancy and I'm usually fine.

I was in the pool this morning and there was a lady swimming there who was pretty average, but she was almost flat in the water without trying - she barely kicked. If she worked at it, she'd be an excellent swimmer .... of course I didn't tell her :-)

:-) Linds

Ferret that does sound a bit alarming. I hate jetskis anyway - too noisy and too often in the hands of show-offs :-(
