From the sounds of it they will split the climbing into three in 2028 and maybe they keep the combined as well, for a possible four golds for each sex.

When they brought Sport Climbing in (last time round or the time before?) they had a single combined event with Speed Climbing, Lead and Boulder as a combined event, mainly because the IOC didn't want to have 3 separate events and all the additional athletes that would come along with it.

However, in the world of Sport Climbing, Speed Climbing is very much a specialism, with bouldering and lead being more closely linked but also having some specialists in each discipline. Speed Climbing is very much about strength, power and speed, whereas the other two need flexibility and problem solving, with lead needing a greater endurance element.

Combining the three, I was hearing yesterday, would be like presenting a medal for Cycling to someone who could win the road race, the mountain biking and the BMX freestyle ON THE SAME BIKE.

Sport Climbing has wanted to split them into their individual disciplines for medals from the start and now they're established that's what they're doing for the LA games.

(Science of Sport did a whole Podcast about it the other day. I'm just telling you what they said.)

Daughter-Out-Law wanted to watch some of the "Breaking" so I've just seen a couple of rounds.

I guess it's as much a sport as wavy ribbons or Smiling While Drowning.;-)

Has anyone seen anything about the changes to Modern Pentathlon for the next Games?

Traditionally it was shooting, fencing, swimming, equestrian, running, to mimic the skills needed by a military messenger back when the games were founded.

Recently the shooting and running have been combined into "Laser run" where it's kind of like a running biathlon with a cross country course punctuated by the shooting element.

Next time round the governing body have decided to drop the Equestrianism element as it's logistically difficult and can cause some issues with the random allocation of horses affecting result.

They're replacing it with an obstacle race, with the course being designed by the people who do Ninja Warrior.

I'm really not sure how I feel about it at all.

To be fair it's a made up sport designed to replicate the skills a soldier requires. I don't think the skills needed in 1912 are relevant today, so I've had few complaints it evolving to remain "modern".

To be fair they're all made up sports if you really think about it. ;-)

Apparently the competitors in Modern Pentathlon are verging on open revolt about the changes. Must be hard seeing a major element of the sport being taken out and replaced with a very different thing.

Imagine if Triathlon took out the swimming and put in, I don't know, Tennis. ;-)

I think the alternative is no event in the Olympics.

I don't know enough about the sport, but I wonder if modern pentathloning in the Olympics would be different to other events if it's only the IOC who don't want the horse furore.

IT's a weird one, politically. The event was created by De Coubertin, so the IOC has a bit of a reputational vested interest in it surviving as part of the games.

And this is all based on what I've read. I've not, if you'll pardon the pun, got a horse in this race.

And nor have they now. ;-)

About This Thread

Couldn't find a thread so thought I would start one.

Who else is off to watch or who is watching at home?

We're doing Lille and Paris and a mix of sports. Currently trying to find travel insurance that includes ticket cancellation as some of the trains in the UK might be difficult and we have some internal French trains to do as well.

Also need to work out the new Paris metro ticket/app combo (Navigo I think).
