How do, Fetchies. Doing Chicago next year, October 2025. We're booking flights as we speak. Excitement :)

Flying into New York for two weeks ahead of the marathon. Looking for people's thoughts and experience on must do's in the area as we're making a holiday of it with some of Mrs J's family coming along for the ride. We are not committed to anything other being in Chicago for a few days ahead of the race, so we can be persuaded by anything really cool and and absolutely must do. Going no further West than Chicago. No further South than Virginia. Up to The Canadian border.

We love running (der, no sh*t, Sherlock), the great outdoors, NOT shopping and we'll have two small people in tow (ages 8 and 10).

Hit us up with what you've got. Cheers :)

Not sure how long you might be spending in NYC, but Natural History museum very good for the youngsters. Top of the Rock has a better view than Empire State, but latter maybe more iconic. Great running to be had in Central Park and along East River path. I'm afraid I have no knowledge of anywhere else you've mentioned!!

For NYC, I’d say the 9/11 museum is a must see - I thought it was incredibly well done. Not sure about for young kids, although there were some there when we went. Also spending time in Brooklyn, and then walking back towards Manhattan over the bridge, to see the skyline. For NYC, if you want to see the main sights, look up the tourist card to see if it works for you - when we went last year it included 9/11, Natural History, Rockefeller, Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty (you can use public ferries to go close to the island, but the tourist card includes getting onto the island and into the museum). For the main sights, factor in queuing for security etc. We were there this year for the marathon and did very different things including hiring bikes, catching cable car over to the Roosevelt Island, seeing a Broadway show, and having breakfast at Tiffany’s, and it did feel much more relaxed. As mentioned, Central Park in the morning is fabulous for a run - I don’t think I’d ever get bored of it. Loads of runners and cyclists out. It’s surprisingly undulating!

For Chicago, the architecture boat tour is great. Prebook somewhere if you want to sample the Chicago pizza/pie on race weekend. We booked into Giordano's, and loved it there. If you want pasta for food before the race on Saturday, I’d book in advance.

I can’t help with travelling further afield I’m afraid. A general comment is that when I did Boston, we flew into New York and caught the train to Boston and the Amtrak was very comfortable. Also, if you want to get groceries, fruit etc, things like 7/11 are very poor in my experience, although in both NYC and Chicago there is a brand called Whole Foods Market, which is good quality. They ran out of bananas before Chicago marathon though…

Arcadia national park in Maine was lovely with lots of good hiking/running trails.

The White mountains in new Hampshire are also worth visiting though the weather could be a bit iffy in October.

Delaware water gap..in Penn is also lovely and only used to take me a couple hours from down town.

Hope that gives a few ideas

Yes another vote for the architectural boat tour. The field museum, art institute ( lots of impressionist ). Skydeck Willis Tower.

Pizza!

Baseball/ Football ( big cost)

Fermi lab, which is where they collide particles together, it's in a suburb way out but if you like that sort of thing.

Goose Island Brewery Tour. Might not coincide with a great race time.

I am pretty sure there are Al Capone gangster walking tours!
