I'm going to Hawaii to run a marathon...after a 2.4 mile swim and a 112 mile bike ride

I had the good fortune to visit from Japan a few times with work, it's a lot closer from there! Therefore a major destination for Japanese tourists wanting some Americana. Warm, pleasant climate, lots of interesting plants and wildlife and volcanoes etc.
The towns and roads are ugly american standard, but you're probably not going for the culture. We had a few nice walks around various bits and pieces including a volcanic caldera, saw some turtles, had an earthquake and a rather hot thai curry one night (had to sign a disclaimer when ordering, but it wasn't *that* extreme). Good tropical fruit etc, but I was happy to be there on expenses.
Probably wouldn't go there again for a holiday but the people we knew who worked there loved it for lifestyle/location and I can certainly understand that.

I think my grumpiness with Oahu was that it was just typical America, which really annoys me after a couple of days. I love the scenery and space in the US, but the whole culture is crap, and the poverty and homelessness, of which there was plenty in Hawaii just jars with the constant tub thumping land of the free bollocks. I would much sooner visit similar places elsewhere in the world.
