Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I am at the Belvedere with Woad Wunner and Little Miss Girlie.

It would be great to meet up,to have someone to go to the bus stop with in the early hours!

Are you going with Sports Tours? We arrive on Thursday 1 November.

It's included with the package.

I believe you have to book it yourself, if it's not included as there's no other way to the start.
Hopefully someone who has done it can confirm that!

We also leave on Monday evening.

Oooooo, exciting stuff! - I booked my place ages ago and although I've been running for a year, my "serious" marathon programme is only 3 weeks old!! I don't know anyone else who is going, so would be great to be able to chat with any of you guys about preparation, now we're all doing it! It will be my first marathon and I'm really looking forward to it!......My husband and my daughter will be going out with me, but not running and we fly out on the 1st, returning on the 8th.....hope I'll be fit enough for shopping afterwards!???!!!...

Hi EO, It is exciting, but at the same time I have to question my sanity, why at my age do I want to subject myself to this!

The answer is that my tickbox of the 10 things I want to do before I die includes run a marathon, and if you are going to do one it either has to be New York or London, and I can see London any time!

My program is also 3 weeks old, and I feel better after week 3 than I did after week 2, but still feel wary about 26.2 miles!

If you want, I can give you access to my training log, it's not very exciting, mostly treadmill stuff, but with the weather we have had I had to do something to keep going.

NZC - I've only done 9 marathons but a few big city ones are included in that. I had a reasonable start pen for both NY and Boston. The bridge and streets in NY are much wider and so the start was much less congested than Boston, where all 30,000 runners are fed down a narrowish road in Hopkinton. I don't think you will have a problem in NY, I was over the start line about 30 secs after the elite men.

Belvedere is fine and really central, the little Greek diner about 75 yds away is excellent for an American style breakfast too.

You need to book the bus to the start and it is the only really way to get across the bridge to Ft Wadsworth.

The expo is also only 10 mins walk from the Belvedere, same as Times Square (in the other direction).

Paul - glad to hear it is not too bad to get over the start. I've got a good for age entry so hopefully that will help.

Just got to get myself more motivated. It is a very long flight from NZ and with time changes hope my body copes well.

I did do Boston - 1991 - found it pretty tough - went off too fast and suffered but that seems to be the way I end up running all my races - guess can't teach an old dog new tricks;-)

What about finding gear afterwards - is that a problem?

Nope, it is extremely well organized (better than Boston). When you cross the line at Tavern on the Green you are gently funnelled along via chip removal, drinks, food, medals, photos etc until you exit CP and meet a huge line of buses with your gear. All very painless and it means that you have to walk about 3/4 mile or so which is just what is needed, even if you may not think so at the time.

I think you can jump onto the Statten Island ferry to get to the start as well. I believe they put on extra ferries for marathon day and I read a story about a guy who got one at 9am and made the start at 10am. That is more appealing to me than having to get on a bus at 6am!!
