Hi All!

I'm Jack (Buff Daddy - love the buff headgear!) and am a Yank from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hope you don't mind my joining the discussion. I've been lurking for a few days and am also getting excited about the NYC Marathon. I'm also getting a bit frustrated with the other "runner magazine" forums as they are getting a bit unfriendly these days.

This year will be my second crack at the New York Marathon and will be my 25th marathon overall. I ran it in 2004 (as my first marathon), and for all the first-timers, you have picked a WONDERFUL first marathon! I'm happy to share any tid-bits on the race and on tourism (I live about an hour and a half drive south of Manhattan). Good luck to all in training and I look forward to reading about everyone's progress. And who knows, maybe I can actually meet some of you on race weekend!

Happy trails!
Jack

Welcome to fetch Buff Daddy, and welcome to the thread. :)

I have mentioned this a couple of times on this thread, but nobody seems to take me up on it. I have heard that you don't need to catch the 6-7am buses to the start and instead take the Staten Island Ferry from 8-8:30am and make it in time for the start. Can you confirm this?

Hi Boab. Thanks!
Actually, what you describe above is exactly what I do since I live near Philly. We drive up the day of the race to the Staten Island Ferry terminal and take the bus from there. I usually get there between 6:00 am and 7:00 am (the past 2 years I did not run the race but went with others in my club in support). According to the booklet, the shuttle bus to the start (costs $20 and requires advance sign up) from the ferry terminal runs until 8:30 am. I've never stuck around that late to see if they stick to that schedule, but would imagine they do. As such, you can take the 7:30 or 8:00 SI ferry from Manhattan and make it to the bus in time (the ferry ride is usually 25 minutes). If I were you, I'd hedge my bet and take the 7:30 ferry.

Note that this will give you extra time only if you are staying in lower Manhattan. If you are staying in mid-town, given the time it will take you to get to the ferry terminal (via cab or subway) you might as well have taken the mid-town bus to the start.

I will also check the regular (MTA) Mass-transit bus schedule as I believe you can take them to the start as well (costs $2 with a metro-card). I had a buddy do this, and it worked nicely for him. I'll contact him and get his recollection on it.

BTW, have you folks in the UK gotten the marathon handbook yet? It has a lot of good info in it.

No, not got the handbook, but DIYDiva has given some of us a copy of an older one. Thanks for the info re the Ferry. I am staying in Mid Manhatten. If I were to get the ferry, is it easy to make your way to the start once you get to Staten Island?

"Easy" and "transit" are rarely used in the same sentence for NYC, but in this case it's not too bad. Apart from the official marathon bus, and public bus, you could take a cab to the start (it's only a couple of miles). There's an car drop-off point shown on the map that will be in your booklet once it comes.

BTW, in a non-running related note, I'm happy to say that in his 20 minutes of playing time on Thursday, David Beckham single-handedly saved soccer in America. Sadly, 20-minutes later it relapsed....

I should also add, that as an added bonus this year, the USA Men's Olympic qualifying marathon will be held on Saturday 3 November, starting in mid-town and finishing with multiple loops of Central Park. I plan to drive up for that too. It's very interesting to observe the suffering of the late miles of a marathon at the elite level.

As for the Beckham's, the question here is which one will find success, Posh or Becks...current odds say "neither" but you never know...LA is a wacky town.
