Yazoo
surely just the fizziness of Red Bull would be pretty unpleasant in your stomach during a race...??

I too am running NYC this year. Coming with the Dreams Come True charity and am very much looking forward to it... I've also got an extra week on the east coast afterwards with no real plans yet so any ideas for places to go, things to see would be much appreciated over here too...

I drank a can of red bull once during my 3rd and final leg of a 6-person 210-mile, 24-hour relay race. I had been up for about 20 hours straight (nearly impossible to get quality sleep in a van full of smelly runners). My final leg was 13.4 miles (after previous legs of 10 and 13 miles)and I drank the Red Bull at about the half-way point. Basically it gave me about a 20 minute energy boost and then a bit of a lull. By the time I finished I headed straight for the port-o-sans, but not to barf. I think I got away with using it because I was not going at an all-out pace during this particular race. For a marathon, and especially one in which you will be travelling a long way to get to, I'd stick with the "normal" routine and avoid the stuff.

Yazoo: any particular interests for your extra week on the east coast? BTW, for those of you staying till Monday or Tuesday, it's fun to wander back to the finish area. They sell finisher stuff at Tavern on the Green but usually the finish line is still set up and you can get some post-race pictures there.

As mentioned previously, Boston (and New England), Philly, and Washington are all within a day's drive of NYC. You could also save some of the NYC foot-tour locations for after the marathon (it will do your legs well for recovery after, and save your legs prior to the race).

Hi Buff... thanks for that, I was thinking Boston and the New England area, but that's really based mainly on looking at Googlemaps and seeing what was near(ish) New York and watching American TV where people always seem to be going on trains between Boston & NY...!

You guys will all have a blast - I did NYC as my first marathon in 2005. I had a pretty rough time, as most people do in the first marathon, but I will be back (hopefully next year) to exorcise those demons.

It's a great race and a great place - you'll have lots of fun.

Yaz - Boston is a nice place and worth a bit of time. If the weather's good that is...

Boab: Follow-up as promised on public transit from Staten Island Ferry to Start: I heard back from my buddy who did this in 2005:

"Yep. I forget the bus line but it runs along the shore and passes close to fort wadsworth. If I remember correctly, it dropped us about a block from the fort's entrance. It's a public transit bus so it's first come first serve but you can't be locked out. That said, they would be well advised to take the NYRR shuttle bus from the ferry terminal if they can, that worked really well last year (2006). They didn't check bibs at all last year but theoretically you're supposed to register ahead of time."

Here's the link to the bus map: mta.nyc.ny.us

I think he's talking about the #51 bus.

For those of you going to NY for the first time, the subway is a great way to get around (it's as vital to NYC as the tube is to London), but takes a bit of study first (the first big key, and suprisingly many confuse this, but uptown is north and downtown is south - that's half the battle to understanding it there).

I remember getting VERY confused by the NY subway system when I visited four years ago. Ended up getting the wrong train so many times!!

In my limited experience using it, I've found the London Underground MUCH easier to figure out than the MTA in New York...

run free
Thanks all on info regarding red bull. I remember taking it once having not slept for 2 nights 'cause was running kid's camps (those little guys never sleep) and had a new lot the next day. One can of red bull at 6am and I was on a high for the day and night and the next day after! I swore never to take the stuff again......but then some years later - I hit "the runner's wall" in the Singapore marathon at 34km. (my first marathon).....

So just wondering if that happened again, would red bull help me recoup faster (probably would drink a diluted version)
