Hmmm coca cola - also has high caffine - perhaps will look at something with caffine (since am actually a little scared about taking red bull after the effect it had on me the first and only time i took it) |

I sometimes have a can of Red Bull before a race, it goes back to the days of drinking it before playing rugby. I tend to drink a lot of coffee anyway and it doesn’t seem to have a big effect, especially in marathons where training, hydration and carbohydrates are likely to be far more important. It is interesting that marathon runners seem to be involved much less frequently in drug allegations than the sprinters. Quite a few people take caffeine tablets (e.g. Pro Plus) which would probably have a greater effect than Red Bull, but again mainly for the shorter events. I wouldn’t consider it cheating as it doesn’t have a big effect, I might even have one before NY. But I can take it or leave it. I wouldn’t want to drink anything fizzy immediately before or during a race. And talking of that – a good piece of advice for drinking from cups during a race is to pinch the top, thereby not allowing as much liquid to escape. Or you can just slow down. |

The Handbook on the website: nycmarathon.org has got lots of useful information on. Has anybody tried Gatorade Endurance Formula? |

Gatorade is very palatable IMHO, not much to dislike about it.

Gatorade Endurance is just like regular Gatorade, but with more salts added (almost twice the sodium, and extra potassium). Flavor is nearly identical ASSUMING they mix it right at the aid station. It usually comes in concentrated form for NYRR Races and they add water. Sometimes they under-dilute it, sometimes they over-dilute it. I would recommend that you grab a cup of water each time you grab a cup of Gatorade during the race just in case it is too strong. If any of you are concerned about it, I have a couple of trial size packets of the powdered version I got in a recent race goody bag, I'd be happy to mail them to you . |

BRubble - sorry, not fizzy coke - flat coke - diluted with half water. But I guess it would mean carrying a couple of small bottles and I'm not into carrying anything so will just take what is available at the feed statiions.
