Boab: I was taught the following trick early on: as soon as you get the cup, squeeze the rim of the cup to make a narrow slit, and then work on getting it down the hatch, this eliminates a lot of the mess

The street corner vendors will have that angle covered! You can get a "Genuine" Rolex watch for $10...as for things lurid, well, this is New York...you'll find plenty as far as that goes...The last time my wife and I were in England our hosts took us to some shops in Camden, or Camdentown, I think it was called. Lots of "interesting" things there to buy...you'll find simliar shops in New York....

Nice one Buff Daddy, will keep it in mind. Saying that, I don't think it would work with the standard plastic cups they have at races over here!!

I recommend Grand Central station for breaky or in the evening for a glass of wine (lighting at night was beautiful). The bus-tours spared our legs and were a laugh as we saw how far back we would be running(but wrap up warm). Top of the Rock was superb as we met others who had that post-marathon walk. There was an ice-rink at the foot of it which my mates kids loved - so pretty at night. 40 carrots was nice to eat at (can't remember if it is in Macy's or Bloomingdales).

Buff Daddy, I'd love some Gatorade Endurance if you could send it. I'm going to Canada next week and I was hoping I could get some there as I can't find any sites that ship it to the UK.

Boab: Yikes, plastic cups? I can see where that would be a hazard once discarded (along with plastic bottles). That said, it can still get a bit treacherous in the bigger mararthons like New York, just past the water stations with all the discarded paper cups and liquid spilled on the pavement. And there was a portion of the course in Brooklyn where they were handing out orange slices. Just past that, all of the discarded peels made for some slick running.

In 05 we met on the top of the ESB the morning after to survey the route and show off our medals. Having been to the Finishers shop at Tavern on the Green of course for some great souvenirs. My personal favourite - a really tacky pair of gloves with NYC logo and each of the 5 boroughs you run through on each finger/thumb. Actually very good quality, very warm and still going strong 20 odd months later.

Unsolicited sports trivia (some of you may already know this, but it may come in handy at a future pub quiz nite):
Gatorade is so-named because it was developed by the sports medicine folks at the University of Florida to help the grid-iron football team handle the oppressive heat and humidity typical of Florida. The team's nickname is the Florida Gators, thus Gator-aid.....
