My step-father introduced us to the concept of supper in the mid-70’s. We never ate after 6pm previously. Toast tonight was my tea, not supper

Supper was important in our house. It would have been bad form to let the kids die of night starvation. It was usually toast, though never with cheese. On weekend nights it was a bowl of M&S ready salted crisps from a big bag.

I used to have some Weetabix before bedtime as a child. I try not to eat after 6-ish nowadays, though I could very easily tuck away a piece of toast right now.

I used to have either an apple or an orange and milk. Probably because otherwise I wouldn’t ever have bothered with apples, oranges or milk but just before bed I was a captive audience.
