Our British veg just aren't used to the heat! On the other hand, the French Beans aren't a lot better.... ;-)

Fragile Do Not Bend
The lettuces I showed a couple of weeks ago germinated just fine. Then something, probably a slug, ate all the leaves off the seedlings. I decided it was worth buying a tray of plants from a garden centre.

Columba
I watched a young (juvenile) blackbird hopping around on one of my blueberry bushes, Fruit green, not yet even beginning to turn blue, but bird decided to sample it anyway. I hooe it gives him/her a tummy-ache so s/he doesn't come back for more.

However, I got a wonderful crop of blackcurrants which the birds don't seem to have discovered this year, though last year I lost a lot to those voracious blackbirds.

Flatlander
Yesterday, I ate the last of last year's potatoes, so this morning I started to lift some of this year's earlies. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a reasonable yield given that there has been no appreciable rain for what seems like 2-3 months.

Well done Flatlander - nice new potatoes for a summer evening πŸ‘πŸ‘
Veg garden and garden in general has spectacularly not gone to plan πŸ™„ Greenhouse is overcrowded with stock that should have been planted out weeks ago - too much work and too little time spent on the garden... have a week off and aim to deer proof the veg garden - maybe next year will be more productive?
Any ideas for winter planting assuming I get a veg garden secured this week?
Love the fencing suggestion Hanneke πŸ™‚ - way beyond my budget - will have to be standard 8' 4" round posts in the ground 18" to 2' and double height stock fencing... may not look the best, but neither the deer or veggies get a say ! πŸ€”πŸ˜‚

I can't help with suggestions, Boffin, as I'm in the early stages of learning what to grow.
Courgettes are finally forming on one plant. The other one isn't doing much at all.
All of the broccoli are now picked - all those weeks of growing for one week of food. I need to rethink that for next year.
One bush of blueberries has been covered in netting to try and prevent the birds from stripping it, like they did the other bush.
One spaghetti squash is blooming nicely :) I'm hoping a few of the other flowers will develop but it's not looking likely.
All in all, early salad crops have done best this year. Sowings for summer eating have been mostly scuppered by the long dry spell. Lots of strong winds have maybe impacted on the germination of flowering veg eg runner beans and tomatoes.

We lifted and ate our first potatoes today along with French beans. Broccoli hasn't started forming heads yet, and the cabbage are just starting to heart

Velociraptor
I have potato foliage growing out of the bottom of my compost dalek. I'm going to have to look and see whether there are any potatoes.
