Congrats on the wedding Jools - hope it wasn’t too expensive and a good time was had by all. Is an exotic honeymoon planned ? Hey @Sorequads that’s a horrible tale. Reminds me of the time my son’s goldfish died and anxiously, I went in search of a replacement before he got back from school only to arrive back at the house without house keys. Retraced my steps round various aquatic centres to no avail. Locksmith out and drilled the lock out and replaced it. Lots of money. Just as I’m about to go in next door neighbour arrived and says oh you left your keys in the door so I popped them through the letterbox for you. As for that race report. Absolutely tremendous July racing conditions, cool with a light mist of drizzle. The day before the race was a rest day and I’d had a tickly throat. Doing the warm up I felt just a bit too hot and bothered but decided to cast it aside as pre race nerves. The race is billed as the biggest town 10k and I think there were around 4000 runners. Certainly recognised some very fast lads and lasses that had travelled to participate as I did my strides. Up to the start then and lined up between the 37.30 and 40 mins pacer. I thought maybe 38 mins was doable off recent performances but was conscious of this being my biggest mileage week for a long while. And that throat continued to tickle. Off we went with a long straight section entering a roundabout where we came off and followed a gradually undulating downwards B - road through leafy residenes. At 1km check the pace and it’s a bit hot at 6 min/mile and likewise I’m feeling more than a tad bothered as the 37.30 flag stretches away from me. 2km is a bit more sensible, around 6.10 min/mile pace but I can feel that my body does not want to let me push myself today - odd sensation where your cadence and breathing are all good but you feel a ceiling to things. Resolved to get to 5km and evaluate the situation. 5km marker arrives with 19.54 on the watch. So I recognise there that sub 40 might be a challenge as I feel the sweat pouring off me at a what would normally be a tempo effort. We begin to travel down country lanes that this time gently undulate upwards and I back right off to 6.30 min/mile pace, expecting the 40 min pacer to pass any second. 7km arrives (must have missed 6) and the little easing back seems to have me feeling better so I start to push it a bit more and pass a handful through a steep rise after 8km and then a spirited dash to the finish line. I never did see that 40 min pacer. Result confirmed as 39.09 which surprised me given the 5km split and the net downhill to that point. Later I find out that the 5km marker was at 5.5km so I wasn’t doing too badly at all in the circumstances. By the end of the day the tickle in the throat has turned to outright soreness and a cough. Sunday night is marked with a fever and today it’s been full on aching, coughing and more fever - and yes, a positive Covid test. So I think I can count that as one where the tank wasn’t quite emptied for good reason and the result hints at better things to come. I must say I am so annoyed with the amount of times I’ve had Covid, having done all the vaccinations, and of course feel terrible that I’ve probably spread it a bit (unwittingly) now. |

Amazed you could run at all @Muddyfunster the only time I had Covid I knew I had it as I could barely make 5k All good fun @Sorequads eh. Great tale! Decent weekend - won the LBAC 5k champs at Aylesbury Parkrun - 16.40. Went off steady ish and managed to keep the pace. Then went to Wrest Park for 10 x 600's - 1.58 for the 1st, but most 1.50, last three sub 1.50, last one 1.44. Sunday was over at Oxford for SAL (Missus was track judging). Took Ollie on a nice 8 miler around Oxford. |

I think it was at the incubating stage Si. I’ve since found out that the wedding I was at the weekend before suffered a mass infection. Congrats on the 5k win! |

Rotten luck @Muddyfunster I’ve had it 7 or 8 times in the last 2 years! Wedding was organised by them with help from friends & family. Venue was her horse field, celebrant was an old friend, reception in a mate’s marquee we erected on Wednesday, band was her mum’s lot so all relatively cheap. Honeymoon is a week in Scotland camping in the roof tent they bought for the purpose. Congratulations on the win @LBAC Si Amazed you were smashing those 600m reps out afterwards. 12 miles of trails in the pissing rain this evening. Felt ridiculously hard. I did 3K warm-up, twice 5x500m off 500 with 3K between then 2x1K on/off. Couldn’t get going at all & legs ache horribly now. Dunno what’s going on. |

That sounds like another round of illness is looming Jools … 7-8 times must be extremely wearing, have you noticed any impact on running (apart from the obvious inconsistency in training) ? Obviously no running at all for me but lots of sweating. Another feverish night full of aches. |

Do you do a job that has you in contact with a wide and varied set of people @Muddyfunster ? I've definitely had covid once, but not sure anymore beyond that. But I did have 2 coughing bugs this year that derailed things, so anything that sort of thing related is an arse for what we do. ps @Jools that wedding looks and sounds absolutely spot on for what I'd hope for for a relation of yourself. Maybe just a 20mile run added on top |

@LBAC Si Nice 5k win, I noticed that one actually on Saturday, as was checking the results to see if my comeback king mate had turned out another one. He hadn't, but naturally saw your name. I don't tend to like doing a race with a day or 2 notice, so at the weekend when I was considering a turnout Tue or Wed, I knew it was unlikely really. In the end I was glad to do a sesh today. 5x1km off 90secs. The old 5k plan actually said off 2mins, but was followed by 2x400m and 2x200m which I wasn't originally planning to do. Road route, different each rep, came out 4x3.33, with a 3.29 in the middle. Old school Moz training was always train at your current fitness, so slightly ahead of the last 5k race I did (17.53 - 3.34/5ish) sounds bang on I think. Especially on the road, and with the 90sec not luxurious 2mins. Threw in a couple of 1mins off 1min then 30secs off 30secs after. Bit more informal - not programmed into the watch, but just aimed for faster, which you'll always manage after longer distance before hand. Look forward to the last Friday track sesh for about 6 weeks in a few days. They were making noises about pairs efforts, 200m with some sort of 100m jog back. Baffled how that could possibly work in pairs. 200m romps in 3s yes, but in 2s, no? Any ideas? |

Huge @Muddyfunster Lost all power basically. My ability to run uphill became laughable & my bike commute pace slowed by 15%. I went from low 19 for 5K to over 22 mins after 3 bouts in 4 months. Gradually work it back down but then get another dose. Not had a sub 20 in almost 2 years. Was getting closer in October last year but got injured which took me out for a few weeks. I’m currently around 21 on a reasonable course. Left foot very painful this morning. It was hurting after parkrun & I’d struggled on the downhill. I raced 10M on the Cotswold Way last weekend but then took several days off as I’d found even the downs hurt. Wondering if I’ve maybe got a stress fracture 😱 |
