It is wrong as stated, but has a bit of truth: there are higher tides both when they are on the same side and when at opposite sides. There is a bulge both at the side nearest the sun and the side furthest away from the sun. Think of it as the sides of the globe getting thinned but the far side is too far away and too soon to get thinned out - kinda like an egg. The moon reinforces this when at either of the two bulges - both the near side and far side to the sun.

Sorry, I worded the sun and moon the wrong way round towards the end, but the principle is the same.

Yes indeed, the tidal forces are the same for full and new moon, it's the slope of the gravitational force across the diameter of the earth. Sounds like the journo trying to make what was said lay-friendly and taking it a little too far.

I was once viewing a solar eclipse by a channeled river that gets tidal bores, and the organisers were very nervous about the bore being exceptionally high because the tides were so perfectly aligned, and possibly overtopping the banks and soaking the local dignitaries. Didn't happen, but the bore was very impressive. More so than the eclipse, what with the 100% cloud cover.

If the expert had said when they are on the same axis it would have been right. Or the Morecambe and Wise version: pulling on the same axis, but not necessarily in the same direction :) I bet the reporter garbled it.

Not quite a meaningless description, more the feeling I had when unpacking this very simple lamp from about 50 nested boxes. And later on that evening when it stopped working.

Fetch. That’s beyond annoying, but your comment made me laugh out loud.
