I think we must have normally ignored that bit of the travel insurance. But I've only been doing the odd 10k which doesn't really feel like much of a risk. And park run but clearly they don't count :-)

Last time we were more worried about the altitude limits as we were planning to cycle up to about 3600m (and succeeded).

I looked into a lot of travel insurance policies with regards to running and cycling overseas recently. In general I found them very vaguely worded. A lawyer probably could have argued that a parkrun would void some of the policies.
For instance policies often excluded long distance events without defining long distance. Asking for their definition of long distance inevitably brought back the question how far are you running/cycling? Yes, that's a long distance.

Also excludes events if that is the main purpose of your holiday. How do you answer that if, like me, you are going abroad and doing a marathon as part of a 3 week sightseeing trip?
Eventually I settled on Yellow Jersey Insurance for my overseas marathon trip. It gives me peace of mind that I shouldn't have to argue any finer points of the policy wording if the worse does happen.

The multisport policy specifically covers marathon running, and marathon running abroad, which is what I want, especially for US where I worry costs could spiral in the hopefully unlikely event that I need medical help. But this renewal has that new wording added, so I’m going to contact them. I just got a quote online from Virgin, which also specifically covers marathons abroad, and as far as I can see they don’t have a similar clause, and it was a similar quote.

jda, as it happens, I just saw a policy that differentiated between marathons above 2500m altitude, and those below.

Dibble, thanks, I’ll have a look at those. Yes, I just want peace of mind too in the case of US especially.

I’ve been mistakenly saying my current policy is from multisport, but it’s actually from multitrip! I’ve contacted them via email as they say they’ll respond and I’d like it in writing rather than a call, if possible.

Mine, which comes bundled with my bank account, specifically includes "Running" as an insured activity, with the coda that it isn't to be "for competition".

I phoned to check, and they were happy that, so long as I wasn't running with the express intention of winning a prize, I would be fine.

However, they're changing underwriters soon and have changed the policy wording, which now says:

We will not cover
Any claim as a result of any insured person:
• Training for, or taking part in any race or time trial, organised sports event or
competition, or any display, performance or tournament.

so I'll have to check again. That's a significant enough change that it's almost worth me looking for a new policy.

Brilliant first overseas marathon experience for me in Seville yesterday. Very flat, logistically extremely easy for runners and spectators, uncongested course, water stations with sports drink every 2km and random snacks at some of the later ones, mostly quiet earlier on with little clusters of supporter and music on some of the corners and roundabouts but a party atmosphere in the last six miles or so, at least by the time I came through. Particularly good for supporters because the course comes back on itself at 12km and almost touches at 22km and 36km.
