Nav 4 Lakes 42 is a good race and I'd second Jacdaw's comments on the Lakeland 5 passes (I did that in 2019 as part of my build up). The 5 Passes has some shared sections, though in the opposite direction. The L42 has only the smallest bit in common but is a classic Nav4 race, tough and very low key, no frills but very friendly.

DT I think you need a software update! ๐Ÿ˜‰ the last reference I can find for that one is 2012, the LDWA group that organised it doesn't even exist anymore they became part of the Lakekand LDWA group who have a couple challenge events (That's Lyth and Spring in Lakeland) both of which are worth a look but may well be full already?

Iโ€™m fairly certain BLRW was ยฃ6 when I did it. Costly but worth it

Iโ€™ve done Spring in Lakeland but never Thatโ€™s Lyth. Autumn in Lakeland is good too (well it is โ€˜til you manage to pour a mug of tea over your โ€˜lower regionโ€™ at a check-point) :-O

Was that ยฃ6 in lsd DT?

There are many ways of getting out of an Ultra mid-race but I'm not sure that's one I'd recommend ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

You can probably add 3 Rings of Shap too ;-)

back to the question though, why not just head out with a map and do some long days in the fells. You'll probably get a better feel for the area that way than following a line of other people in a race. And it's a lot cheaper :-)

Thanks all

This is true flanker ๐Ÿ™‚ I was thinking of killing two birds with one stone as a condition of my UTMB CCC deferral to 2023 was to do at least one qualifier in 2022. There's a couple I can see on their list. Mountain Festival 50k mentioned by jacdaw and Ultra Challenges 1st/2nd halves which are a bit steep!

A *bit* steep?

Fโ€™kinell! Ive done one of their events before, it was expensive but not like that!
And ยฃ25 per night to camp, ยฃ15 for a shuttle bus back, and parking on top?

Shame, cos a half route would be a nice day out - easy enough to do the route solo and use a bus, so I might find a weekend to do that instead.

Rosehip ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€ I did look at the pricing for a while and thought well maybe it's for charity. I hope it is!

Mind you I suppose you could say the Mountain Festival 50k is comparably steep considering its sponsored by a well known German shoe maker. I guess I assumed they would subsidise it slightly, maybe they do and it would be more if not. ๐Ÿคท

ยฃ58 for the mountain festival 50k isnโ€™t in the same league as Challenge Events pricing though, a bit tempted by that one, but think Ive got more planned this year than I have legs for already
