It always was park at the end, bus to the start, then you just get on with it. Water and biscuits at the check points. Let them know you've finished, then go home.

Don't expect anything will have changed because of Covid, but it may have done.

Aussiecall - unless you plan on winning the race or being dead last you are unlikely to ever not be in sight of the person in front ........ its a mega popular race..... route finding wasnt' my issue ....... it was finding myself a secluded spot for a wild wee the route was that busy ;-)

I'm doing the 50 for the first time and I'm not going to get near any recce days or even near any of the course beforehand. I don't use GPX or GPS for navigation and I'm kind of assuming that, with a route description, a paper map and some fellow competitors within sight, I won't go too far off course.

I like to have the route burned into my brain so I don't have to think on the day(s).

That makes sense, jacdaw. In my case, although I'll obviously be a bit miffed if I go more than, say, a couple of hundred yards down the wrong path, I'm in it for the overall experience and not for position/time, so I'll be quite happy if I have to stop and ponder every now and then.

The road book is excellent, John K’s Youtube really helpful and there should be someone to follow - although I did recce Troutbeck to Coniston, because that’s easy to do.

Depends whether or not you want to know what’s coming up.

My strategy to finish within the allotted time doesn't allow for any ponder time!

I remember the Howtown to Haweswater section being particularly challenging from a nature wee perspective. About 1,000 people and on the top, you could see for miles
