I remember that, and the importance of the height of the bar off the floor. eL Bee! made a pair of little platforms to elevate the weighted bar for me because we didn't have large diameter weights.

Yeah, similar to V-rap for me. In the actual gym nearly a fortnight ago - first time this winter block - my coach had set me 'proper' deadlifts. 4 sets of 6 reps. Cos I hadn't done them for ages I went 25kg - 30 - 40 - 40.

My deadlift best last year was 3 x 55kg but Gem says 40 is fine for now.

HOW you do lifts is also important - because I am a power athlete I am often asked to do lifts fast (and then slow on the return) - this means less weight usually. More weight, fewer, slower reps for strength building.

It's a bit more complicated than that, obvs.

My bar is just a standard home user one
2x 4kg plates plus the bar (2kg!)
With the plates I have (the pairs) it would be 42kg in total I think

Wonder if I could then add the plates from the dumbbells? They are 2kg each

Don't jump straight from 10kg to 40 plus! I mean you weren't going to were you?

That's a decent set, Pix, but you might eventually want to be able to deadlift more than the 50kg maximum for that bar. It might be better to get a standalone bar to use with your existing weights.

That’s the thing vrap with my set being so old I’m not sure the plates will fit modern bars

Measure the hole in the middle of the weights and make sure you know the diameter of any bar you buy, Pix. Many of our weights are ancient but they're interchangeable with the ones VP bought in a set from Decathlon just a few years ago.

I guess at 12.X kg this bar would be a good start then if the current weights didn’t fit I could buy more as I advanced?

I assume the plates “hole” need to be 2 inches despite the write up saying cm!

That's all a bit confusing with mixed imperial and metric measurements.

I was always told an Olympic bar weighs 20kg. This is what they are in most gyms. If you are lucky there's a 15kg women's Olympic bar - which is shorter and therefore easier to manage for short women like me. But the 15kg bars seem quite rare in gyms.

If I were buying just for me I''d get an Olympic standard 15kg bar.
