Thank you all.. I really appreciate your compliments.

Gus .. itโ€™s fern and feather by Jennifer Steingass. She has loads of variations on top down sweaters. I just paid me money ($6 I think) and downloaded it.

I can't knit or crochet. Well, I can kind of. I can't cast on for knitting, and can only do plain or purl once started, and I can make coaster-type thing in crochet, but that's it. Both are on my list of things to learn properly, anyone got any suggestions where to start, other than YouTube?

In the meantime, here's something I have made, using modular origami:

I have found VeryPink Knits to have good videos for all things knittery on You Tube, but don't have any non-You Tube advice.

For crochet, I bought a book for beginners off Amazon and followed the diagrams.

Knitting is only plain or purl stitches just in different combinations so youโ€™re not doing badly!
There are lots of different cast on methods but if youโ€™re starting it doesnโ€™t matter which one you use. You can even do a crochet chain and knit into that.

Not sure about non YouTube, it really is very helpful to see stuff in action and I second Very Pink Knits. Attic 24 for crochet has photo tutorials, not sure about similar for knitting.

Ooh, I like the idea of starting by a crochet chain, that's one thing I can do!

I may have to bite the bullet and get on to YouTube. I guess the advantage of that is I could always rewind several times if they go too fast.
