Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Hi all - novice knitter here, picking it up again having not knitted since my teens which is far longer ago than I want to think it is! Have read back a bit and am being inspired by your lovely projects, and definitely have my eye on a cabled hat at some point.

I wondered if any more experienced knitters might be able to help me work out where I'm going wrong on my current pattern, please? I'm just doing practice squares and have started trying increases and decreases. My pattern is:

Row 1 (RS) K2, *P1, yo, K2tog tbl, P1, K2; rep from * to end.
Row 2 P2, *K1, P2; rep from * to end.
Row 3 K2, *P1, K2tog, yo, P1, K2; rep from * to end.
Row 4 P2, *K1, P2; rep from * to end.

Twice now I've done a couple of rounds with no problem, and then I get midway through row 2 or 4 and discover I've picked up an extra stitch somehow, and really can't work out where or how, and end up undoing pretty much the whole thing. Can anyone suggest where to look to see where I'm going wrong please? Many thanks in advance!

Maybe you’ve been adding an accidental yarn over when switching between knit and purl? I remember doing that when I was learning.

hi and welcome!
Next time, don’t rip it out until you’ve worked out what’s gone wrong.
First question - how are you doing your YO’s? A YO is the simple act of putting the yarn over the needle - it does not include knitting the next stitch. Many of the videos on You tube show the next stitch being knitted because it anchors the YO, but it does cause a lot of confusion.
Try it again, if it still doesn’t work upload a photo and we’ll see if we can see what’s gone wrong

Thanks FDNB and HellsBells. I've found the YOs a bit challenging, mainly going from p1 to YO to k2tog tbl - I've realised I knit quite tightly so the k2tog tbl has often taken me a few goes, so that might be it. I'm working on loosening my tension too!

I still struggle to 'read' the knitting and was trying to unpick a stitch at a time to work out what had gone wrong - but then kept dropping the stitches. Something else to keep practising...

Really enjoying it though, and looking forward to making something wearable before too long :-)

Who was talking about overlockers? Aldi have them as a special buy, online only, for £129.99. They’ve also got dressmakers dummies.

Overlockers are complicated things, I’d prefer to spend a bit more on a reliable brand.

If I had room for one I’d definitely get a dressmaker’s dummy though!

Those are super mittens, SS. I like the colour choices.

A friend saw the purple hat I knitted last week (on FB) and asked me to make her one. I've just finished it. I don't think I made any mistakes this time🤞and only had to undo 1 row.

I like the hat and the colour is nice.

I finished my hat Friday and already making one for hubby and more in the pipeline.
