I've not tried any of mbjm patterns yet but the folk seem very helpful and have lots of tips for us who haven't sewn anything for a long time. My only pattern makes so far are from Tilly and the buttons, pyjama trousers (and shorts with the excess material), and the second pair of bottoms I used the duvet and added pockets, a bit fiddly but so pleased with them.

And the Stevie tunic. I tested that using the rest of the duvet before I used my proper material, so glad I did since I had to size up but the finished item got lots of compliments at the weekend. I'd never have thought of using old/cheap duvets to test patterns.

Many years ago I did a adult education dressmaking class (It came with free crèche). We were encouraged to experiment with tricky processes e.g collars, button stands, zips, sleeves using old sheets. I still have a portfolio of random bits of garments in unexpected colours and designs.

I've got the Wendy Ward books, which encourage a progressive learning approach. I just lurk on MBJM and don't start anything.

I have successfully altered a dress pattern for a fuller bust by using an old sheet as a sort of toile first, to see what amendments I needed to make.

Just turned on TV to see Pointless - a lwoman called Suzanne has a dress made out of a beautiful turquoise fabric, and I wonder if it is home-made.

I love the mbjm patterns that I’v made - fit is really good, and instructions are very good. Would definitely make more! (And wish my children were smaller still as some of her childrens patterns looks brilliant!)

There do seem to be many more Independent/ Small pattern companies now. Is that right?

Why would Vogue/ Simplicity etc be losing out? Is this all about PDF patterns?

In my (limited) experience the indie patterns have clearer instructions (and in larger type too).
