The ones my mum made weren't itchy because she didn't use actual wool, possibly because she can't tolerate the feel of it herself and comes out in a rash.
I'm sure it would be possibly to make lovely soft Arans now using the smooth merinos and suchlike that are available. I'm not sure I have the patience, and am not keen on making or wearing bulky clothes anyway.

It's amazing how cheap acrylic wool-u-like is more comfortable than the real thing when it comes to the itch factor!

i made an aran cardi out of sirdar eco wool. it's a little bit itchy but not too bad. i'd probably use a different wool now, but at the time i wasn't really sure i was capable of knitting it having just learnt to cable so didn't want to spend too many squillions of pounds on it. i do love it tho, it's kind of donkey brown
don't worry, m4p, i still have baby brain and my younger's 17

I believe Aran blends are available these days and not itchy at all.
M4P - nah, it was me, I got the wrong end of the stick. I've set up a Fetchie group on Ravelry. Can't see why there can't be a Rav group on Fetch.
Wow, that makes my head hurt thinking about that....

That's probably partly a man thing, DeeGee. Apparently men are a lot less capable than women of tolerating funny tickly or scratchy-textured clothes.

I have some sympathy with men on that point, since I hate the feel of mohair and am not too keen on angora or rough tweedy wools.
My stash includes some undyed "silk" that feels as if it's been made using several thicknesses of crochet thread twisted together. It was an eBay purchase that was too good to be true, and now I'm trying to work out what I could knit with it before using it for my first experiment in dyeing

Gosh this is a nice thread, has inspired me to dig out the tapestry I bought in Inverness a couple of years ago after the Marathon. I WILL get the threads now and get it started. Does Tapestry count for this thread. I'd love to be able to do cross stitch but my eyesight is so bad I can't really see the pattern very well. I nearly finished an nice quilted knitted jumper front and back then half a sleeve but I couldn't keep the pattern straight when the shape of the armhole came along LOL.
