Paddled around some fields on the Somerset Levels today, this is two weeks after the initial flood.

On the "road" back to Langport where the water was farm gate depth, the wind picked up and made the temporary lake very rough and choppy - it was a rather interesting little paddle!

Actually I think this is a better explanation of the state of the fields

Ade1973, I get a bit nervy on moving water, last time out at sea I capsized on the tiniest wavelet you never saw! It was fine, I was within standing depth but it's scared me more than I thought at the time, must do some confidence-building next summer! Must be my inner-daisy coming to the fore ;-)

Merry Christmas & Happy NewG(rrr)
Lol Jubear. The one good thing about the recent flooding?

Tell me canoe and kayak types - can you do it all through winter? Where I would do it if I could is the canal. It's frozen solid at the mo. Presume you can't just cut through it like an ice breaker, so when do you have to stop? Do you need specialist cold weather gear (gloves, hat/whole head cover, wetsuit etc?) :-)G

Absolutely you can paddle through the winter. As for running, woolly hat gloves or pogies, a proper cag and lights for when it's dark. When it 's icy, though, fibreglass and carbon/ Kevlar boats will get damaged, so stick to the plastics or take a few days off!

What Bruletide said - winter running kit & a steel clenched-first style ram duct taped to the front of the kayak :-)

Some of my best trips were in the winter, ice breaking where necessary. All moving water though, so only the eddies were frozen solid. Happy days. :-)

Today MrJB put one kayak on the car and we drove to a medium-distance-away canal carpark. I set off running an uppy-downy loop while MrJB set off in the kayak and after a few miles I joined the towpath at the earth dam where the water stops. MrJB paddled up to the dam almost as I arrived, and we headed back to car with me running ahead and looping back. At the car I got into the kayak and paddled home while MrJB drove back.
A runner passed me as I was paddling and gave me the Paddington hard stare. "Weren't you running earlier?" he asked.
"Cross-training, mate" I assured him and we both went on our ways rejoicing.
Thus, I got my medium-length run, a paddle, *and* MrJB off the sofa. Successful weekend.

Interesting and useful day at the Introduction to Slalom day with Frome Canoe Club. Lots of useful tips and whatnot plus a go in a slalom boat which made me appreciate my tame, flat-hulled little plastic piglet!
BCU 1* training starts next week. Crap. The capsize stuff drills still scare me stupid, probably always will.
