Well The Leg behaves like a spoilt brat when I involve it in proper running-training mileage! It doesn't mind kayaking and happily the canal is only quarter of a mile away. I know about the bikes , whats your paddling history then?

Ah yes, well, pull up a sandbag.
I paddled a lot in my youth. Mostly winter river trips involving bits of white water on the Upper Severn and Wye, the (Stratford) Avon, the Dart and a few other rivers in between training in the local canal and up at the old gravel pits at South Cerney (which is apparently now an exclusive waterside resort, no less - how times change!). I've also surfed off the Gower, thrown up in the Jack Sound on the way back from Skomer and I paddled the DW a couple of times ('88 and '89) as half of a double before work / life / other interests kind of got in the way for a while. Did a bit of paddling as adventurous training with work and then met a great girl and got back into touring open canadians as an interesting way to avoid a long walk-in on the way to conquer some Munros. Then family got in the way.
The great news is that we have just agreed that 2013 is The Year for getting back into it, with the kids in tow.
HUZZAH!!

Huzzah indeed! And nicely established credentials!
Well I'm a DW groupie, which isn't much use to anyone but hey.

Angus, I did the DW in 88 and 89 too. Small world, isn't it, particularly to fit a race that long into.

Hi Nellers, small world indeed! One of the instructors on my course this summer was also there in '88 and '89 (when I beat him!), but he's also been back 5 more times since and is heading for the 1000 Mile Club in 2013. He helped to fire me back up this year.

It was a long time and a lifetime away, AC. I doubt if I'll ever go back to training and racing onthe water again.
'88 I was still in the juniors.

I know that feeling, but.........
Well, who knows. Never say never again and all that. Although the start line's no longer less than an hour from my front door.

Just on a wee stroll along the towpath with MrJB we came across two very shiny new-looking tandem sit on tops, one which was scrambling up the bank & manhauling the kayak out of the water. Henry, our resident bolshy male swan, had terrorised them onto the bank. We said, Oh Henry, he's all show (this time of.year, true, he's a more meaningful swan in springtime) & helped them back onto the water, steadying boats, passing paddles and so on. We all proceeded in the same direction at the same pace for a few minutes until mrjb could bear it no longer. "You've got your paddles upside down," he said."please, for the love of.god..."
Anyway they did turn them round & shortly afterwards they thanked us for our assistance & paddled back the other way. It was probably for.the best, mrJb isn't known for his patience as a teacher

Very pretty paddle last weekend on our local Canal. Flat and easy for running, flat and easy for paddling, what's not to like?
