Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Is there such a thing as a waterproof gilet?

The trouble with jackets is that the sleeves get clammy inside, whether they're waterproof or not. I like a gilet in cold and wet conditions. I see plenty advertised that are wind and water resistant but can anyone recommend to me one that is properly waterproof. Good enough for a couple of hours, say. I don't go on all-day treks across moors.

Ta muchly in advance.

I have a few for walking - but my running ones are 'water resistant' and just add an extra layer rather than waterproof. I wouldn't fancy running in my walking ones, they're quite thick and solid.

Try going from the jacket end: golfers prioritize freedom of movement and carrying on play during rain. There are quite a few waterproof jackets with zip-off half-sleeves or complete sleeves.

Maybe a cycling one? I have a couple of gilets for cycling that are water resistant and one that's definitely waterproof (I wear it for time trial warm ups - Geraint Thomas famously forgot to take his off for the prologue time trial in the Tour de France road.cc )

I wore a thick tee today with arm warmers rather than a jacket

For running in the rain I prefer none waterproof stuff and then opt to shower and put dry clothes as soon as I've finished running. Today for example, running vest, shorts and calf guards were plenty warm enough.

For walking I recently bought one of these....

It's brilliant but doesn't help much. Sorry! πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚

Yes, look at cycling ones. I have two: summer and winter weight. It keeps the core dry without sticking sleeves, which is especially tedious in summer with bare arms.

They do sound like a good idea. Thanks for the tip, Hanneke.

Thin arm sleeves(cheap ones sold on Amazon as sun protection sleeves in my case) under the jacket stop that horrid clammy feeling, but don’t feel as warm as a long sleeved tee would.

you can have them rolled down on your wrists if you think jacket will need to be deployed whilst out.

Go old school and have a cape. Definitely waterproof and keeps your arms free to blow in the breeze
