When I did a Half Mara the distance didn't feel all that notional Muttley!

Yes, that surprised me too. I'm significantly quicker rowing than I ever was running at all the distances I've done so far, to the extent that I could do a steady state Half Mara 4 or 5 minutes quicker than I ever ran it. I'd have thought sub-2 would be perfectly do-able if anyone worked at it, which I guess is the key.

It would take a special mindset to really want to work at that!

To be fair, though, I've just checked it. 2:21 for the marathon means holding a 1:40 split. That's quicker than my 500m PB so I'd still put that in the "eff me that's fast!" range.

Same here. 10k on the erg at 45-46 minutes is a fairly standard sesh for me. I never cracked 45 minutes running a 10k.

Good luck to Cracknell for his attempt. I've seen him in the flesh and as I recall, he's not a particularly big bloke. Redgrave and Pinsett are huge and their size helps their power.

Nothing here yesterday.
Did some gardening on Tuesday and was bitten by some kind of flying monster thing.
4 bites to the lower chest, 2 under the arm pit and 3 across my back.
It feels like I have been beaten with a metal bar.

Have had insect bites before, but this is something else.
Have been on pain killers and antihistamine just to try and take the edge off.

Maybe tomorrow.

Will be interesting to see how James Cracknell gets on and to know how much specific preparation he's done on the erg since he was originally hoping to run the distance.

I read somewhere that 400m running roughly equals 500m rowing. That was in the context of shorter intervals in a CrossFit training session, I think, so I'm not sure how that converts to longer distances.

I'm finding that my rowing PBs are roughly the same as my running PBs in the 5K and 10K range and probably even the 2K, though it's a bit difficult to compare since I set most of my running PBs about 10 to 15 years ago.

It doesn't seem to work for me over shorter distances, though, where my erg times are quite a long way behind my running PBs. My best running distances were 200m/400m/800m when I was younger but I'm very definitely not a sprinter on the erg and seem to do better over 5 or 6K. Has anyone else experienced that (or the opposite)?

Sinj, that sounds awful. Any idea what it was? Insect bites can really knock you for six, so I hope the antihistamines and painkillers do the trick.

That does sound grim Sinj. Look after yourself.

CW: I think it takes more to get the pace up on the Erg so shorter distances are probably run quicker. I reckon the crossover is going to be somewhere between 400 and 800m where the higher cruise on the rower will come good. I reckon I could do 100m on the track quicker than my C2 100m PB even now (I'd bugger my achilles trying so don't hold your breath!) and even at 200m it would be a race. After that I'm pretty sure rowing me beats running me (even running me at my PB best) all the way through to the Half.

I think my crossover between running and rowing must be around the 800m mark.
Not as fast on the track as I used to be.
However, our club has joined a track league for next season, so best dig out those spikes and get practising.

I ran a 200m in a vets league last year. When you haven't trained for that it was the hardest thing I did all year. Took me a good 30 mins to get any breathing back.

Still no rowing here. Spoke to the doctor this morning and had an over-the-phone consultation. Sent some pictures through and it is shingles.
Classic around the chest, underarm and back. All on one side.

Still quite painful. It is the sensitivity that is annoying. The pain I can manage, but I can feel every slightest movement rubbing against my t-shirt.

Should clear up in 2-4 weeks :)

Shingles is shit mate. I had it about 10 years ago and it's not fun. I do sympathise. I remember that feeling of being ultra-aware of everything that touches your skin. Hope yours clears p nearer the 2 than the 4 weeks.
