Ah-ha, a newbie on the thread. Greetings Spendap. I too am carrying a little more weight than I would like and have the added complication of getting a bit long in the tooth. For me the erg is a godsend: aerobic workout, no pounding of the joints. Win win, especially when it's pissing down and blowing a hoolie outside.

Thanks for the welcome Nellers and Muttley. Agree that the erg is a great workout if I'm injured or the weather is too bad to run. I meddle with turbo as well, but the erg is much more like running in intensity, plus holds out the distant hope of a 6-pack. I'm not very adventurous in my erg workouts though, I tend to just do 30mins at a steady-ish pace. That's probably fine for what I'm doing at the moment (marathon training) but I should probably chuck in some high intensity stuff. I tend to get pulled calves if I do running speedwork, so maybe replicating that on the erg is the way to go

Again, no idea how well the fitness would cross over but there are lots of “fun” interval sessions I could share with you if you fancy trying them out.

I accept no responsibility for the effects of any such sessions though.😉

I might take you up on that Nellers. After I've got the marathon over and done with I'd like to work on 5K/parkrun times so I could probably use some more intense erg sessions

Welcome Spendap, another crocked runner here but I love how erg training can be very similar to run training with tempo, easy, long, interval sessions etc.
My partner was injured in 2018, so she did interval sessions on the Erg 3 times a week and she was in great shape when she started running again!

A good place to start looking at more varied plans is the link to the right for the "Wiki of useful things". Loads of reading to be had there :-)

That said, I'm just doing steady stuff at the mo, regrouping and working on mileage.

I think I'm over my bug properly now.

I've gone from a very slow 5km on Monday, through a slightly faster half hour Tuesday, 60 minutes of stroke sequences last night then 6 x 2km at tempo tonight.

Steady 10km tomorrow then I'm going to try a 2km test on Saturday and see where I'm starting from before a 6 week block to get ready for that Midlands champs.

Slight miscalculation with the plan. I'm not going to manage a row on Valentine's Day evening.

There's a Leicester City match on Sky. I'll watch that instead.:-)

We’ll call yesterday a taper. Test day today. 20 minutes of warm up then the big dance!

Result: 7:11.

Kind of pleased with that as it’s the benchmark starting point of the 6 week block before that race at the end of March.😀
