Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

But srsly (ish) presumably big floppy shorts are a no-no in tri training or in a swimming club, training type environment? The club had us down for 2,400 m in an hour, which is more than i've ever done before. And that was in the slooowww lane! I was told that baggy shorts are only for olympic athletes trying to give themselves some extra drag - akin to running dragging a tyre or wearing a weighted pack!

Srsly, big floppy shorts are like swimming with a parachute attached to your bum - jump in feet first and you'll see - or try tumble-turning. Doesn't work.

And TI = Total Immersion. I'm in a minority, but I'm *not* a fan.

It is nothing new. The idea to be at one with the water is something that I was teaching to kids 20 years ago. If one is taught correctly the stoke (yes, entry, pull push etc) one will feel a the benefit of an effective and technically correct stroke. I am at one with the water when I swim - and I have not been taught TI. Just been taught who to swim correctly, coached by some pretty good coaches, and have swam more miles in my years than I have run!

Swimming with grace - in an ideal world!

Only TI gives you the mater the art of swimming! FFS - just watch most of the Oz swimmers - they swim with grace and high degree of effectiveness!

It is nothing new - just packaging for getting people into their little band wagon!

fair enough Barky. i've never learnt TI so can't comment from first hand experience.

But i watch my kids being taught to swim and nothing seems to have changed since i was a kid. it's all "maximum effort, fight your way through the water" where everyone comes out knackered at the end.

surely anything that enables people to swim more efficiently is a good thing? two people at my work took TI lessons. One, in particular, was a very average swimmer and since learning via TI can now (literally) swim 5 miles with comparatively minimal effort.

If they are being taught to fight the way through the water, then I would question the teacher and the attitude - but I will not say anymore - as I would need to see the the swimming at first hand. I have had issues with teaching methods for my own daughter and have had to change teachers a number of times. I would teacher myself, but according to her - I am dad!

Anything that teachs people to be better swimmers is a good thing, and that is not what I have against the idea. what I do not like is the marketing that makes it the best thing since sliced bread (in terms of swim teaching).

In addition, there is a major difference between teaching and coaching. Teaching is in very simple terms, being able to get someone to move from A to B in the water. Coaching is being to make that person perofrm that in a more effective manner - be it speed, technique, stamina. Thus coaching WILL include some teaching. I am not going against your friend and to be able to swim 5miles (which is about 8k) is very admirable, but I would say that is more coaching and a lot of determination of your friends part - and not teaching.

My objection to TI seems to be loosley similar to Barky's - I'm not comfortable with Pose running and the like for similar reasons. But efficiency and ease is all - and fighting the water isn't the way.

IMO swimming is *remarkably* like golf. You don't necessarily get better just by hitting more balls on the range, and hitting the ball 'harder' doesn't necessarily make it go further.

I have seen POSE swimming video on You tube - and I had no idea what it was on about or what it was trying to do!

Greg what you say is very true - there is a certain fdeel about swimming - thats why I say that Ti is nothing new.
