Nightjar
Had a nice swim in the sea yesterday. Only in for 15 minutes but my fingers were white from the knuckles down. This seems to be a new thing for me in “cold” water.

I've just been for my first pool swim since March 2017. Back then, I was just getting the hang of proper front crawl breathing, but could only breathe on one side then, so it was back to the beginning today. Interestingly, I've previously needed to wear a nose clip and exhaled through my mouth as I kept breathing in water through my nose, but I bought a "learn to swim" book a few months ago and have been practising exhaling through the nose and inhaling bi-laterally at random times eg whilst watching tv, when on a walk. I forgot to put the nose clip on today and found myself automatically exhaling through my nose and not my mouth, so something has clicked into place.
The first 16 lengths were really hard work and I couldn't even manage a length with my breathing pattern all over the place - I was exhaling for 3 then inhaling to the left each time - and then it suddenly changed to me exhaling for 2 and breathing in on alternate sides and I was then able to complete a length at a time without drowning.

32 lengths - 800m - in 46 minutes is slow but a starting point.

The session was a really well organised. I booked on line 3 days ago (though had difficulty paying so had to phone up; but that was soon sorted). Only 15 people allowed per session; 3 lanes (slow/medium/fast) with a max of 5 per lane. We were given a number when we went in to use for the cubicle and locker. Changing rooms have become unisex so loads of room as only 7 or 8 people in each one.

I can't wait to go again!

Don’t beat yourself up about the breathing being hard for the first 400m GM. You’re “warming up”, getting the blood oxygen levels sorted for the exercise level. Nice swimming.

swim in Box End yesterday was lovely - apart from being a bit choppy on the return length.
Inspired by GM, I've booked my first swim in the pool for Monday morning, interesting to see it said something like 27 spaces left - so I don't know how many will be allowed in at once.
