So do we assume that Garmin tells people what they are hoping to hear?

BBC Radio 4 this morning. Listen from 19:19 for a 'more informed' summary of the true numbers of people visiting Brockwell Park last weekend.

If someone slightly exaggerated the true figure and it meant folks stayed home for the rest of the weekend plus we could keep nipping out for our 50 or 60 mins then good for them

Thanks swittle for that. Really interesting. 3000 people in a day in a massive park is not a big deal. Just tried to find the size of the park near me and think it's about the same size. Most people use the footpath around it so it looks a little busier but not too bad.

There seems to be a lot of hate for people just "being outside" without obviously exercising. Like you need to be doing some cardio to be allowed out. I've no problem with people just going out to sit down, lie down, read a book, watch the birds etc so long as they are distancing.

It always gets hit with the "well if everyone ...... " argument. Fact is everyone isn't and won't. People are largely listening to the distancing advice and if they went out when it was super busy and hard to distance then lots would change their timings and go when it's quieter.

I've scorned the "it would be intolerable if everyone did it, so we have to ban it totally" argument since my school days.

If everyone in the country wanted to catch the first 37 bus after 9 am tomorrow, that would make a fine bit of chaos, but no one's talking about banning it.

One of the issues for a lot of people is where they're isolating, and what facilities they have there.

I'm lucky. Reasonably large house, reasonable sized garden, home gym in the shed. No real need to go out out to exercise.

I have a mate who lives in a one bed flat. No garden, no access to any exclusive open space. Parks are it for them. They're not the only one like that by a long shot.

If we're going to reduce access to open spaces for everyone it leaves them in a really difficult position. Being isolated alone and in such a small space with no meaningful opportunity to exercise (I know there's a lot of home workouts doing the rounds but if you're a runner.....) is a very different prospect than a lot of us (luckily) face.

Condemning people for going out is, in an awful lot of cases, inadvertently punching down from a privileged position.

And no, I don't have an easy answer to it.

This is the problem with reinforcing hysteria, panic and paranoia.

The "stay at home" message is irrelevant - it's because the govt thinks people are stupid/will ignore them. The "distancing" message is what is important. And even that has been overstated.

Clear evidence and reasoning in the advice and instructions was what was required all along.

I have no problem with people going sunbathing. As long as it is done with the appropriate precautions and those who do object are simply killjoys.

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.β€”(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the needβ€”

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:
legislation.gov.uk

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):
college.police.uk
Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
