I am fortunate that it is easier for me to maintain social distance on the fells than on the roads. I hope I am at least managing to maintain agility. According to Garmin Connect, my fitness age is now deteriorating at a rate of about 1 year per week whereas it was improving at that rate in January and February. As FF pointed out recently, the Garmin VO2max algorithm is poorly adapted for fell running, though it is possible that a greater tendency to pause on summits to watch circling raptors and to say hello to a friendly fell pony is contributing to the slow-down in acquisition of fitness.

I acquire my data with a Vivoactive 3. I record HR using the optical monitor on the wrist; It took me awhile to work out the best way of mounting the watch on my wristt to get consistent readings.
In Garmin Connect, select: Reports/ All activities/VO2max. This gives an estimated VO2max, presumably based on HR and pace. The display also gives a statement of your fitness age

Canute - We have been trying to keep from using the car, or going out for more than an hour. That said, we could easily spend time on local hills with zero extra social contact if we break on or other of those. If our mental health deteriorates, we may have to break that self enforced restriction in the future.
We can get the fitness back, that's just an added frustration we guess.
Still miss spending time over 3000 feet.
Would probably have been playing on Beinn a' Bhùird this week...

Minardi, I've just found my VO2 max reading under the burger menu (three horizontal lines to left of Android app screen), select "Health & Performance", and VO2 max is a few lines down. I'm laughing hysterically because it says my VO2 max score today is 46 ("Excellent") with a fitness age of 20. That's more or less 1/3 of my actual age.... Take with a large pinch of sodium free salt!

um
I was pleased with my 43 and 43. And 'excellent'. (vs real 64)
Now Mmm has spolit it and (I assume) I need to train a bit harder?

I have my suspicions as to the accuracy of this.

And raptor spotting & pausing? Two kestrels today, roughly in the same spot as we saw the buzzard yesterday.

Thanks guys, it's given me a VO2 max (42) but not a fitness age. It just says that I'm in the top 5% of old biddys!

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.—(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the need—

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:
legislation.gov.uk

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):
college.police.uk
Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
