I read an interview with Carey Mulligan who said that one reason they included smoking so much in the film is that at least one of the characters (can't remember which) had said in real life that they really enjoyed smoking. so it's absolutely appropriate for the characters in the film to smoke. I was just noting that I hate to watch it and I'm sure there were at least a couple of scenes where them not smoking wouldn't have made the slightest difference to the plot.
Chrisull 9 Jan 2:26pm, 9 Jan 2024 21,000 posts	0 Chrisull Smoking in films - Holly Martins (played by Joseph Cotten) in the Third Man, the lighting of the cigarette in the very last frames of the film, is iconic, metaphorical, and an absolutely pitch perfect ending to my shout out for the best film ever made. (Certainly trumps Citizen Kane) He's the "hero" even if he's a somewhat naive chump. Without the cigarette the ending just wouldn't work.
