Going back to my original comment about so much smoking in Maestro (and I didn't expect this subject to get so much attention, lol!) I read an interview with Carey Mulligan who said that one reason they included smoking so much in the film is that at least one of the characters (can't remember which) had said in real life that they really enjoyed smoking. so it's absolutely appropriate for the characters in the film to smoke. I was just noting that I hate to watch it and I'm sure there were at least a couple of scenes where them not smoking wouldn't have made the slightest difference to the plot.

Smoking in films - Holly Martins (played by Joseph Cotten) in the Third Man, the lighting of the cigarette in the very last frames of the film, is iconic, metaphorical, and an absolutely pitch perfect ending to my shout out for the best film ever made. (Certainly trumps Citizen Kane) He's the "hero" even if he's a somewhat naive chump. Without the cigarette the ending just wouldn't work.

I would imagine that actors who refuse to smoke can get that written into their contract (if they are sufficiently 'big'). Most cowboys seemed to smoke. And Andy Capp... |

Phook - Withnail is indeed a good drinking film and there’s the drinking game too …. I spotted something more up-to-date recently which would make a good drinking game film. It escapes me at the mo’, but will post when I think of it.

Ah I know what it was - Last Tango in Halifax. Not a film, but people are often going for a pint or sharing a bottle of red wine (always red). Then there’s the endless cups of tea and mysteriously people hardly ever needing the loo.

I saw MBD years ago. I recall it was quite funny but not much more about it.
