Fields I agree re: the smoking and authenticity. I’ve been watching iplayer a lot recently (no tele) and it really does. Factory tea breaks etc …

i agree it's authentic, it's just that I hate to look at it. having said that, there were plenty of moments that I assume were created for the film (e.g. conversations between the couple that no one else was witness to, and even a bedroom scene) where they were smoking but it wouldn't have made the slightest difference if they weren't.

I struggle with depictions of violence and gore - once had to watch Saw round a friends house and spent the entire film looking at the time counter on the dvd player

My Fallen Leaves review is now on the blog. Hoping to catch a couple more films later this week.

As for smoking, surely that’s part of the authenticity for any period piece?

Every time I see someone smoking in a film for atmospheric effect a part of me wants to be back there (I gave up more than half a lifetime ago, but it's a habit that's never left me).

Bridget Jones's Diary - which we saw on Throwback last year - has a whole bunch more smoking than I'd remembered it.

That said, I've never smoked and smoking in films doesn't bother me either way.

Just finished watching Saltburn on Prime. Can't decide if it was brilliant but flawed or just batshit crazy! Either way I mostly enjoyed it, I think....

I don’t like watching smoking now, it makes me feel ill, not nostalgic.

Rather bizarrely the warnings on things like Disney Plus feature 'smoking' as the main thing. For instance, we are midway through the Timothy Olyphant (packed his trunk) series, Justified and at the start of Season 4, the certification came up '15, contains tobacco use'. Two minutes into the program someone is discovering the mangled corpse of a parachutist whose 'chute failed to open. But yeah, warn us about the smoking.
