The UPP is having a Coppola v Coppola season uppcinema.com at the moment. I went to see Lost in Translation last night.

I don't really need to, I have the DVD and the soundtrack, which I've listened to a million times. The music isn't quite as much of the film as I remember, although it's still a big part of the experience. Although I've seen this at home many times, it's not until you're watching with an audience you remember that some parts are quite goofy and funny, but the stillness and reflection remain.

Anyway it turns out: I'm still lost, 20 years on.

Son of a Pronator Man
I went to see Next Goal Wins on Saturday A heartwarming, gentle comedy. I genuinely laughed out loud and shed a small tear. Its story that's been told a few times, washed up coach and a washed up team, initial friction, developing respect becomes love and they save each other at the end of the film

I've got no real choice tonight. Aquaman 2 is the only real option. The screening has currently sold zero tickets.

Happened three times last year that I was the only person (M3GAN, Scream VI and The Flash)

Everything I’ve seen and heard about aquaman 2 is that if you can cope with the dumb you’ll enjoy the flashy bang.

can't recall anyone on here giving a review of Maestro (OK, it was only out in cinemas for the smallest amount of time.) Watched it on Netflix. It is a really well made movie, though a personal gripe is that I can't stand to watch people when they're smoking, and Bradley Cooper (playing Bernstein) smokes in virtually every scene, with Carey Mulligan (playing his wife) smoking in many scenes. But both give excellent performances.

I noticed some online comments the other day about some people complaining that Cooper mumbles too much and a lot of his dialogue gets missed. I found that, but assumed it was just my hearing continuing to get worse!

I wrote an in-depth review of Maestro for my blog last year, GordonG, where I also vented about the excessive smoking. I didn't find the "mumbling" nearly as distracting as the voice Cooper puts on in the latter half, which sounded too much like Rocket.

I was otherwise positive overall, but it seemed like a fairly bog-standard biopic when all was said and done.

yes Cooper's changing voice was odd. but I have no idea how Bernstein spoke so I assume it really did change like that. Probably due to all the smoking!

I reckon criticisms of mumbling are often due to poor TV speakers, especially if a sound bar or similar are not corrected, the inbuilt speaker is likely not sophisticated enough to handle the sound design of a Hollywood film.

I have my tv sound output via optical cable to my hifi speakers and don’t find any trouble.

As for smoking, surely that’s part of the authenticity for any period piece?
